Surviving Summer Storms

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Over this past 4th of July weekend, parts of Frederick, Maryland and Washington, D.C saw tremendous rainfall and intense flooding as storms blew through the area. Streets were inundated with rain as they began to resemble rivers in a short period of time, swallowing cars and flooding even The White House’s basement. During the summer season, thunderstorms are prevalent due to the increased presence of moisture and rising warm air in the atmosphere, which combine to create the perfect conditions for thunderstorms to form. With this enhanced risk of thunderstorms during the summer and their occurrence throughout the year, it is crucial to be aware of the dangers of thunderstorms and how to protect your home or business from becoming damaged during a thunderstorm.

Thunderstorms often produce lightning when rolling through an area, which could directly strike your home or business, resulting in several types of serious damage. Firstly, lightning is powerful enough to sear through roofs and attics or tear shingles and gutters from roofs. Lightning can also cause electrical damage, as the risk of an electrical fire igniting is enhanced during a thunderstorm if lightning strikes the building. Computers, refrigerators, and other electrical appliances have the potential to be destroyed if they are plugged into an outlet when lightning strikes the building.

Flash Flooding

Thunderstorms can also produce large amounts of rain that can result in rapid or flash flooding, inundating road ways and submerging areas in water. The flood water often carries sediment as well as mud, which can contaminate all objects that flood water may touch in your home or business. Understand that mold can grow if the water damage is not removed quickly. Flooring, carpet, drywall, and electrical systems such as heating and cooling systems are usually impacted in floods, so be on the lookout for any signs of damage to those items. It would also be beneficial to check that the flood water has not shifted the building off of its foundation, as it can be a possibility and may require significant restoration.

What Can I Do After the Storm?

When a thunderstorm hits, check for physical signs of lightning or flood damage to your property as soon as the storm is over and it is safe to enter potentially flooded areas. Also check that your breakers and light switches are functional in order to assess any electrical damage. Leakage from plumbing systems and visible water damage to carpets, walls, or flooring indicate that flood water has contaminated the area and that cleanup must be hasty in order to prevent mold growth. Lastly, lessen the chance of water and electricity reacting during the cleanup by turning off water and electrical systems.

What to Do When Your Washing Machine Floods

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

There’s never truly an opportune time for our washing machines to break, so when they do, it can cause quite a headache. The hoses and seals inside washing machines can break and cause flooding at any given moment, so when it floods, the machine must be repaired quickly and the surrounding area must be cleaned quickly in order to protect against the harmful effects of water damage.

As soon as you become aware that the washer is flooding, unplug the washer and turn off the water in order to keep any more water from flooding and to prevent the water and electricity from reacting during cleanup. Remember to also remove the clothes that were inside of the machine during the flood from the machine before starting to clean up. Eliminate any standing water with towels, a mop, or a wet water vacuum depending on what is available to you. Once the standing water has been removed, dry the area by opening windows or turning on fans or dehumidifiers. Repair and replace items that were harmed or destroyed during the flood. Among the items that typically need to be replaced are carpets and drywall. Be sure to sanitize the area before returning to business as usual.

In order to prevent the washing machine from flooding again, do not pour an excessive amount of detergent into the machine. Too much detergent can cause suds to form and overflow from the washing machine and cause flooding. Monitor the condition of the machine’s hoses, as corrosion can signify that they may be on the verge of breaking. If this seems to be the case, exercise extreme caution when running loads of laundry until they can be repaired. Keep an eye on the state of the drain line as well, since the washer can flood if the drain becomes clogged.

How to Prevent Grease Fires

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

It might surprise you that grease is the common culprit when it comes to initiating the majority of kitchen fires. Grease fires can become uncontrollable in very little time, so it is necessary to prevent them from igniting in your kitchen. Be conscious of safe and dangerous practices alike for cooking with hot oil in order to best protect your home from grease fires.

Safe Practices

Be sure to remove any flammable objects from the cooking area before you begin cooking. If a grease fire were to ignite, leaving combustible items, including cookbooks or paper towels, on the cooking surface or even in areas surrounding the surface enhances the risk of the grease fire expanding, as those items would also catch fire. While cooking, make sure that you are monitoring the cooking space. Turning your back for even a few seconds can allow for a grease fire to ignite, so it is crucial to be as attentive as possible when cooking with hot oil and grease. Also, be sure to save any cocktails that you may be drinking before the meal until after you’ve finished cooking in order to prevent misjudgment or any mistakes from occurring that could cause a grease fire. In the event that a grease fire does ignite, however, keep a metal lid as well as some baking soda nearby, as both can be used to smother it. It is important to understand, though, that baking soda should only be used to smother small, isolated grease fires.

Dangerous Practices

Throwing food into hot oil would be an example of a dangerous practice when cooking with hot oil. Doing so can cause the hot oil to splash and potentially find its way onto the hot cooking surface, resulting in a grease fire. Instead, be sure to gently place the food into the hot oil. This is especially important to remember when cooking with frozen food. Allow those foods to thaw before cooking them in hot oil. Finally, refrain from throwing any type of liquid onto a grease fire if one were to break out, as doing so may cause the fire to grow instead of smother.

What Causes Pipes to Leak?

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

A common explanation as to what causes flooding in homes is the leaking of pipes. It is important to prevent flooding in homes, as it can lead to water damage. Learning how to recognize indicators of leaky pipes will help you to protect against water damage from leaking pipes in your own home.

Rusting away at pipes, corrosion can damage pipes. This damage will often cause leaking. Corrosion can be spotted with three visible indicators: rusting of the pipes, discolored water emerging from the pipes, and warped pipes. Protect your pipes by investigating the state of the pipes before buying a home and having the water’s pH levels tested by professionals. If the pipes do corrode, be sure to utilize adequate clamps to temporarily fix broken pipes before professionals arrive to sufficiently repair the pipes.

Seals are fixed to water connectors when pipes are installed. Flooding can occur when those seals crack or break due to age or wear. It’s evident that pipes are broken if condensation is present on the pipes or if puddles of water begin to form in areas beneath the broken seal. Watch for these signs in order to best protect the seals in your home from cracking or breaking. It may also be beneficial to run water frequently, as neglecting to run water for extended periods of time can cause seals to crack and dry out pipes. Perhaps ask a neighbor to run your water if you need to leave home for any extended period of time.

Radical changes in temperature can cause pipes to expand or contract, which causes pressure to build inside of the pipes. That pressure can result in pipes cracking and therefore leaking. Watch for an elevated water bill, a stuffy or musty smell emanating from the drain, and changes in the pressure or flow of the water as signs that changes in temperature may have damaged your pipes. To prevent this from occurring, expose the pipes to wam air, run water through the pipes, and keep your thermostat at a set temperature.

Preventing Water Damage To Carpets

Preventing Water Damage To Carpets

Why Does Water Damage Occur In Carpets?

Water damage often occurs in carpets as a result of a leaky pipe, plumbing issues, flooding from a weather event, or buildup in places such as basements and attics that hold water. Although it’s an issue that happens rather frequently, water damage to carpets must be remedied quickly in order to prevent serious damage.

How Can I Tell If My Carpets Are Damaged?

Many times, water damage to carpets may not show any visible signs of damage. However, there are other indicators that may suggest that your carpets have, in fact, been damaged by water. If the carpet gives off a musty odor that will not subside even after cleaning or if family members living in the house experience continued symptoms of allergies or illness, these may be signs that your carpet has been damaged by water. Discoloration in any area of the carpet is a physical indicator of water damage.

What Happens If It’s Left Untreated?

It is crucial to act quickly, as the longer the moist carpet is left untreated, the more harm it may cause to the sub-floor underneath the carpet as well as to the carpet itself. In addition, mold and mildew may grow in the moist areas of the carpet after time, which cannot be cleaned and therefore, the carpet would have to be removed. Mold and mildew can contaminate the home’s air regulation system, so it must be removed as soon as possible, as it can negatively affect the health of those living in the house.

How Can I Protect My Carpet?

A wet water vacuum must be used to absorb the moisture in the carpet. It would also be wise to check furniture that surrounds the area in order to make certain that those objects have not also been damaged by water. The impacted room should be aired out, which can be achieved through opening windows and utilizing fans or a dehumidifier. When the carpet is impacted by water damage, the padding underneath will need to be replaced. Sprinkling the affected area with baking soda and then vacuuming is an effective method of treating an isolated area, as well as steam cleaning the area to get rid of dead mold spores. Cleaning other walls and carpets in the room would also help to fend against any more mold growth. To ensure a thorough elimination of any contamination, call SERVPRO.

Preventing Fire Damage in Your Home

Preventing Fire Damage in Your Home

Common Causes of Fire in Homes

Multiple household items are flammable. These are important to recognize in order to prevent fires from starting in homes. Among these items are shaving cream, rubbing alcohol (including nail polish remover), hair spray and other aerosol cans, and even non-dairy coffee creamers.

Electrical Risks

It is important to understand that risks for fires don’t necessarily have to display a physical flame. Household electrical items such as electrical outlets and hot plugs commonly serve as risks for house fires. Wires of electrical items can also spark and create a flame.

Risks with Smoking

It may be surprising to some that smoking indoors is the primary cause of fires starting in homes. Falling asleep with a cigarette that is still burning, using insufficient ashtrays, and neglecting to completely put out a cigarette can cause house fires. For these reasons, it is crucial to avoid carelessness when smoking indoors.

Risks with Candles

Many of us commonly burn candles inside, but it is important to exercise caution when doing so. Keep candles away from open windows, as drafts can blow candle flames toward flammable objects. Also remember to keep candles in proper candle holders to prevent the candle’s flame from reaching flammable objects that could catch fire.

Hazardous Combinations

There are specific common household objects that, when combined, can increase the risk of a fire igniting. Keep grease away from an open flame, electrical appliances away from water, and linens away from heaters. It is also important to make certain that fireplaces are protected with either glass doors or a protective screen to prevent its flames from spreading outside of the fireplace.

5 Ways to Avoid Fires in Your Home

  1. Do not place objects on hot surfaces unattended
  2. Keep a fire extinguisher someplace accessible in your home
  3. Replace frayed wires with new wires
  4. Remember to check the batteries in your smoke alarms once a month
  5. Check furnaces and other heating devices routinely

Flooding in Iowa

6/22/2019 (Permalink)

13 inches of rain hit Burlington, Iowa by storm this May over a 2 day period, leaving the city flooded and in need of remediation. In addition to the rain, large hail, high winds, and tornadoes hammered the area, which resulted in flooding that swept through the city as well as the flooding of nearby rivers, such as the Missouri River.

During February of this year, a remarkable 25 inches of snow blanketed Des Moines, Iowa. The melting of all that snow left the ground completely saturated with liquid, unable to hold any more water. Therefore, the 13 inches of rain spread across the ground just as it would across a cement or tile floor, flooding highways, roads, and homes in its path. SERVPRO received around 30 job files and three crews were sent to Iowa to restore what was damaged in the flood.

Flooding can result in the contamination and damage of drywall, support beams, and even the foundation of homes. The damage to homes ranged anywhere from wet finished basements of 500 square ft to 3,000 square ft to wet flooring, walls, and content. Mold is most likely to grow in the initial 24 hours of the flooding, which calls for swift action from restoration crews.

The most satisfying component of restoring flooded homes was the crews’ ability to help flood victims bounce back in addition to the gratifying feeling that emerged as a result of helping those affected by the floods.

Broken Pipes in Chicago

6/22/2019 (Permalink)

In February of this year, five consecutive days of subzero temperatures chilled the city of Chicago, Illinois. Popular sites in the city such as The Chicago River froze completely. Just a few days later, the weather changed drastically from temperatures of -50 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This rapid change in temperature resulted in broken pipes in Chicago homes, which is where SERVPRO crews were able to step in.

Broken pipes are not uncommon during the winter in many areas, as drastic changes in temperature, which can occur before the transition to spring, can lead to the bursting of pipes. In Chicago, the extreme cold heightened the probability of pipes bursting in the homes of Chicago residents this year.

Freezing temperatures cause the water in the pipes to freeze, so when temperatures rise, the pressure in the pipes increases, causing the pipes to burst and therefore, flood. Flooded basements and water damage to walls and carpets are amongst the damage that burst pipes can cause. Wet areas and homes that have been damaged by flooding are more susceptible to mold growth because mold grows and multiplies in moist areas.

Objects such as drywall or ceiling tiles that cannot be repaired must be removed in order to protect the rest of the home from further mold growth. Objects such as glass and ceramic, on the other hand, do not need to be removed, as simply cleaning those objects would be sufficient.

About 30 job files were received, so SERVPRO recruited three crews for the restoration. Journeying to a different region of the country and planning to tackle such widespread flooding excited and motivated the crew to travel to Chicago and help those in need to recover.

Job of the Quarter - April 2019

4/22/2019 (Permalink)

Our team in action!

Each quarter SERVPRO of Harford County highlights our “Job of the Quarter”. Basically, a loss we cleaned and restored that highlights not only our breadth of services, but the scale of work we are able to complete.

This quarter was no exception. A storage facility in Virginia Beach suffered a devastating fire started inside one of the storage units. The fire quickly turned to 167 units that were emblazoned and ended in only 80 of those units being salvageable.

We were called to the job to help clean up this unfortunate situation. “Wait a minute?”… you might be thinking, “Virginia Beach?”. That’s right. We have large loss teams that specialize in servicing our commercial clients in whatever location they may need us. The ability to respond directly to our customer’s needs outside of just our local market sets us apart from our competition. We are here to help, no matter where you need it!

Our teams hit the road running and were able to work with each individual storage unit owner to determine which items they would like to salvage and which items were to be disposed. After the debris removal was complete, the 80 salvageable units were cleaned, sanitized, and restored to pre loss conditions. The work did not end there, however. Our team then was responsible for the demolition and removal of the 87 units that were deemed a total loss. Please see our picture to the left of our team in action operating an excavator to complete the demolition portion of this job.

Helping people is certainly our passion, and in this case, we were able to get this business operational quickly and help their customers clean and organize their affected belongings quickly. We were honored to be chosen to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Happy 10 Year Anniversary!

Our SERVPRO family!

May 2019 marks a very big milestone for the Wall Family. 10 years as SERVPRO owners and operators!

Many people don’t know the personal journey behind our SERVPRO franchises and many more don’t realize that SERVPROs are independently owned and operated.

There are over 1800 SERVPRO franchises throughout the United States and Canada. Our family runs and operates three of these offices: Hunt Valley, Harford County, and New Cumberland/Carlisle, PA. It’s been a path of quick growth and an incredible amount of dedication and hard work by an entire team of people.

We thought sharing our SERVPRO story might be appropriate for our 10-year anniversary. So, here’s how we got here…

Jim and I met while working in Philadelphia, PA at a public accounting firm, KPMG. We were engaged quickly… 6 months! And, at the same time, left our public accounting firm jobs to pursue other career paths. Newlywed life was good and our jobs were solid. That is until the recession rocked our country to the core. We found ourselves laid off (both of us), living with Jim’s parents, and pregnant with our first child. Life never goes the way you plan it, does it?

An opportunity to open a SERVPRO franchise in Hunt Valley, MD presented itself and we are thankful every day for taking the chance. SERVPRO corporate provides tremendous support to their franchisees and their core values aligned directly with ours. It was a great fit, and luckily due to the optimism youth can bring, we took the risk, moved our life to Northern Baltimore County, rolled up our sleeves, and got to work.

This is very much the abbreviated version and those 10 years hold a lot of trials and tribulations along our path to growth. It is ultimately the solid team we have been so lucky to build that has helped us grow to be among the top 20 of 1800 SERVPRO franchises. Consistently. Year after year.

We want to take the opportunity to thank all of you directly for your continued support through out the last decade. Ultimately, if it wasn’t for a customer, we would not have the opportunity to be a business. Thank you very much for giving us a chance to earn your business not just once, but for a lifetime.

Many thanks and looking forward to another great 10 years on this SERVPRO journey!

Why Did My Basement Flood?

4/3/2019 (Permalink)

Water will find the least path of resistance and it could be into your basement. Be prepared and know how to prevent a flooded home!

Why Did My Basement Flood?

Flooding of basements is one of the most common issues most homeowners face. Although flooding occurs during heavy rains or rapid snowmelts, it can also occur in dry weather.

There are many reasons for basement flooding including seepage, storm sewer backup, and improper grading among others. As the basement lies in the lowest level of a building, it is prone to flooding.

What causes basement flooding?

These are the most common causes of basement flooding:

Foundation Leaks: Water can seep into the foundation if there are cracks in it. The risk of flood in your foundation is more if your home is near groundwater. Cracks in the foundation can lead to significant water leakage into the basement.

Leaking basement windows: Windows in the basement can leak and let water creep in during rains. Whenever it rains, there could be a significant collection of water on the windowsills. Fixing the windowsill is the only option to prevent basement flooding.

Blocked sewer: If the manifold that connects the public sewer system to your house is blocked it can lead to floods in your basement. It is important to call local authorities immediately to address blocked gutters and SERVPRO of Harford County to mitigate the sewage and water damage.

Debris in gutters: The gutters play a critical role in preventing basement flooding as they carry away rain water from the home.  If they are clogged or damaged, they can overflow during rains and allow water to build up. If the ground near the basement soaks up too much water, it can seep into the basement as well.

Improper grading or sloping: If the yard does not slope away in the right manner, rain water does not drain effectively. If the sloping is towards your home rather than away, excess water can result in basement flooding.

Improper downspouts: Downspouts channel water away from the foundation and should be at least 5 to 6 feet away from the wall of the basement. If the downspouts are missing or broken, water tends to pool near the house and slowly seeps into the basement.

SERVPRO of Harford County provides professional emergency clean up and restoration services on a 24/7 basis. Should you encounter water or sewage damage call our office directly at 410-679-6260.

Top Reasons to Clean HVAC and Ducts

Top Reasons to Clean HVAC and Ducts

Your HVAC system not only helps maintain an optimal temperature inside your building, but also prevents dust particles and other harmful contaminants from entering the interiors. A malfunctioning HVAC system, however, is more of a liability than an asset and fails miserably at performing its job. Additionally, a dysfunctional HVAC system can cause mold growth. More often than not unclean ducts are the culprits behind malfunctioning HVAC systems. Getting your HVAC system and ducts cleaned regularly pays dividends in the long run. Not sure about whether to get your system cleaned regularly? We, in this post, will give you not one but four reasons to show some love to your HVAC and duct. Take a look.

1.Helps avoid health issues

With time dirt, dust particles, mildew, mold, and allergens settle in and around HVAC ducts. The system circulates these particles with air. Inhaling air laden with these contaminants can give rise to a number of health issues such as skin allergies, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. Your HVAC's filter cannot trap all these contaminants, which is why it is necessary to get your ducts cleaned regularly.

2.Helps improve performance

Unclean and clogged ducts drag down your system's performance and can result in high energy bills. Cleaning ducts regularly help improve the airflow, which is one of the essential prerequisites for ensuring flawless performance.

3.Adds years to the system’s service life

Studies suggest that 9 out of 10 systems do not last long due to improper or inadequate maintenance. Getting your system cleaned regularly not only adds years to its service life, but also helps avoid costly fixes. Getting your system cleaned regularly can expose underlying mechanic and other issues before they snowball into major concerns.

4.Helps eliminate musty odors

HVAC systems with unclean ducts often circulate stale air with a strong metallic or musty smell. Moisture builds up in the duct often results in a burning smell. To maintain the quality of life, contact an HVAC repair expert who will perform a thorough checkup and address system issues.

SERVPRO of Harford County is a trusted leader in the clean-up and restoration industry. We are NADCA certified and have completed HVAC and duct cleaning for both large and small commercial facilities. Please give us a call directly at 410-679-6260 for an estimate to help improve the efficiencies of your property.

When is Mold Remediation Covered by Insurance in Maryland?

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

Not cleaning up Water Damage correctly can lead to a much bigger and more costly problem!

When Insurance Will and Won’t Cover Mold Remediation

One of the unwelcome consequences of water damage, dampness or humidity is mold overgrowth. People who are sensitive to mold experience wide-ranging health problems including wheezing, nasal stuffiness, coughing, throat irritation, skin and eye irritation. Those who are allergic to mold can experience severe reactions. Mold can worsen the health condition of those who are immune-compromised or have chronic lung/respiratory illnesses. The costs of mold-related diseases are as high as $22.4 billion annually in the U.S. alone as per the Journal of Environmental and Public Health.

Mold is a fungus that occurs naturally and is not visible to the naked eye. Reproducing with the help of spores, mold can infiltrate buildings easily. Mold insurance is an absolute must for homeowners given the high cost of repair and maintenance of buildings that have been damaged by mold.

What does insurance cover mold remediation?

Homeowners insurance typically covers mold damage only when a "covered peril" causes it. The “covered perils” for which mold remediation is covered by insurance companies include:

  • Fire
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Malicious mischief
  • Lightning
  • Damage due to vehicles
  • Falling objects
  • Weight of snow, ice, or sleet
  • Frozen pipes
  • Accidental water overflow from heating, plumbing, sprinkler systems, air conditioners, and household appliances

When does insurance not cover mold remediation?

Home insurance policies do not cover mold remediation if it resulted from preventable causes such as flood, water damage, or high humidity. Homeowners are expected to take preventive measures to avoid mold damage that includes professional cleaning, drying, and regular maintenance.

Standard homeowners’ policies will not provide mold remediation cover for “maintenance” problems such as repeated water leaks, continuous water seepage, humidity problems, and ongoing issues related to condensation, landscaping or drainage. Most homeowners’ policies also do not cover flood damage which is usually provided as a separate add-on.

Addressing water damage at it's onset with the help of professionals at SERVPRO of Harford County is the ideal way to prevent the costly expense of mold remediation.

What is Ice Damming?

1/9/2019 (Permalink)

Illustration of ice damming

What Is Ice Damming?

Weather is often the most obvious culprit behind a host of problems including building or structural damage, injuries, mold growth, water damage or flood.

An ice dam is a common occurrence in winter in areas where snow is in plenty such as the Hereford Zone. Basically, an ice dam refers to build-up of ice on sloped roofs’ edges of heated buildings. The build up occurs when melting snow beneath a snow pack reaches the roof edge or eave and freezes there.

The frozen snow on the eave prevents the meltwater drainage that further builds the ice dam. The backup of meltwater causes water leakage and structural damage to buildings and their contents. Ice dams can also damage ceilings, walls, insulation and other areas. When there are areas of dampness, the risk of mold growth is also high.

What causes ice dams?

Along with snow, the outside surface temperature on the roof should be more than 32 degrees F with lower surfaces on the roof being less than 32.  When outer surface temperature is more than 32, the snow begins to melt. The melted snow flows down into the roof and reaches the lower surface where the temperature is less than 32 and here is where it freezes forming an ice dam.

Sources of heat within the building lead to formation of ice dams include:

  • Chimneys
  • Air leakage
  • Improper insulation
  • Exhaust systems

Ice dams and injuries

Ice dams can cause serious injuries and some businesses and homeowners have experienced property damage up to $20,000 because of this phenomenon.

Many of the claims are because of property damage that occurred due to pooled water in the ice dam or roofs collapsing.

Why choose SERVPRO? SERVPRO is the leading specialist in water removal and clean-up when your property or structure is at high risk of damage from ice damming or water leaks. With state-of-the-art drying techniques and water removal equipment, SERVPRO can help restore the building to its original glory.

SERVPRO of Harford County responded to a burst pipe at a 12 story office building in the midst of the freeze-and-thaw winter pattern

Every year when winter arrives, homeowners and commercial establishments brace for icy conditions and plummeting temperatures. Close to 250,000 homes experience burst or frozen pipes in the U.S. every year. In fact, SERVPRO of Harford County responded to a burst pipe at a 12 story office building in Cockeysville, MD in the midst of the freeze-and-thaw winter pattern. A pipe broke on the top floor of a 12 story office building affecting every floor beneath it and 30 occupied units. Our team was able to extract and dry the building in 72 hours with minor demolition required. All tenants were able to stay open for business throughout mitigation.

Apart from cutting off access to running water, frozen pipes can damage property when they burst because of the immense pressure created in the faucet, so what should you do when pipes are frozen? Here are some of the emergency measures you can take to thaw frozen pipes:

  • The most popular pipe-thawing option is with hot water. Wrap the pipe with a burlap bag or a heavy towel to concentrate heat against it. Place a bucket to catch excess water and pour boiling water on the towel.
  • Some plumbers also advise pouring a big bowl of hot water to which some salt is added down the frozen drain. The slurry acts like rock salt that is used to melt sidewalks that are covered with ice. Repeating this a couple of times can get water flowing again through the pipe.
  • A thaw machine is a portable device used by plumbers to thaw the frozen pipe. The thaw machine provides high currency, low-voltage electricity to thaw the pipe. As sections start to thaw, warm water flows through the ice and melts it.
  • Propane torch with flame-spreader nozzle is used by some, but this can be a dangerous device to use. When not used carefully, the torch flame can ignite or damage wall behind pipe. Placing fireproof material between the wall and pipe can be a precautionary measure.
  • Using a garden hose is also one of the safer options to thaw pipes. Insert a hose as far as possible and feed hot water using a funnel at the other end.

Calling a plumber immediately is always the best course of action to prevent serious consequences of a frozen pipe, but if you need mitigation from a burst or frozen pipe, SERVPRO is the trusted leader in the cleaning and restoration industry and has the required expertise, technology and training to handle wide-ranging water damage restoration services.

SERVPRO fo Harford County raises $2,700 for the children at St. Vincent's Villa

It has always been important for SERVPRO of Harford County owners Jim and Trish Wall to give back to the community. They were thrilled to be a part of St. Vincent's Villa Pancake Breakfast with Santa, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus on Saturday, December 8th in Timonium, MD.

SERVPRO of Harford County reached out to friends, family, vendors, and to the public, and boy did they respond! We collected $1,350 which was matched by the company for a total donation of $2,700 for gift cards for the children of St. Vincent's, a comprehensive residential treatment facility for children ages 5-14 operated by Catholic Charities of Baltimore. Our generous donors had their names written on ornaments placed on a tree which was presented to St. Vincent's along with gift cards and small gifts by our festively dressed marketing staff, and our very own SERVPRO Storm troopers.

As you can imagine, the Storm troopers were a big hit with the children. According to Trish, "This morning was truly one of the most special and rewarding experiences I have ever had. Watching those kids' faces was priceless and getting to interact with them to make them smile was amazing. Thank you all for making this a possibility and I really hope we can make it an annual event."

Tips for Preventing Kitchen Fires

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Stay with the food while you cook at your Edgewood,MD home

The kitchen is a source of many home fires, but there are many things you can do to keep your family out of harm's way. Some hazards you can easily remove by making small changes in the way you cook. Other risks can be minimized by properly maintaining the many appliances in the room. Take a look at some statistics from the National Fire Protection Association and then use the following quick tips to avoid the frustration and expense of kitchen fires.

  • Two-thirds of home-based kitchen fires start when food and other cooking materials ignite.
  • More than 60 percent of home cooking fires took place with ranges, as opposed to ovens.
  • The number of household kitchen fires peaks on Thanksgiving Day.

Don't Walk Away

One of the most important things you can do to protect your kitchen and home from fire damage is to stay with the food you're cooking. You need to act fast if you have a grease fire. Don't walk away while waiting for water to boil and if you have to run out to do some errands, turn off the stove and remove your pots of food. The same is true of any food you have in the broiler.

Clear the Area

The second of these tips is to inspect your cooking area for items that could catch fire. Check your clothing for large-fitting shirts or aprons. Watch out for oven mitts, appliance cords, or recipe books that could catch fire if they are too close to a burner. Many home chefs use towels to move pots off the stove, but these could dangle onto the burner and lead to flames.

Think Safety

As you invest in appliances for the kitchen, don't forget to purchase a fire extinguisher and smoke detectors. These two affordable devices could mean the difference between expensive fire damage with injuries and a small amount of cleanup without injuries. Don't just buy those items; make sure you know how to use them and that they are in working condition.

The more you know about cooking safely, the better off you and your family will be. You may find that fire departments and fire restoration companies in Edgewood,MD, have additional tips to offer.

When Is a Roof More Than a Roof?

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Roof damage due to storm and wind in Edgewood,MD

Businesses in Edgewood,MD, are sometimes battered by inclement weather with such ferocity that even the roofing materials can be in danger of being torn from the building. As a business owner or manager, you may already know how to maintain a secure roof, but you may not know why it is imperative to prevent roof damage. So, why is it important to maintain the security of roofing materials, including tiles and fabrics? The answers may surprise you.

1. Coverage

A roof is often designed to hold the building walls together. When the design is fractured, it can weaken the integrity of the whole building. With the loss of a secure structure, the chance of wind damage can splinter the walls or crash the roof onto the offices, apartments or work spaces below. If there are multiple floors, the damage can be costly.

2. Security

Roofing materials are typically created to meld together into one unit once they are installed. This can provide security against roof damage for the apartments, offices, machines, and inventory hidden inside the rooms in your commercial building. When a sudden storm appears, knowing the building is secure can be important to tenants.

3. Protection

Sometimes storms rear their water-spattering heads without significant warning. When that occurs, employees, clients, or tenants can be stranded in your building during the worst of the tempest. Your roof may be the only protection between those people and rain, hail, or debris. In other words, your roof can be a protective umbrella.

Sometimes a roof is more than just a roof. Whether it is holding a building together, providing security for offices and apartments, or acting as a shielding umbrella, your roof may be the most important part of your building’s structure during the storm. Wind can be brutal in its roof damage, so rather than letting nature’s blasts cause you to get a roof rebuild, why not continue the regular annual maintenance on your roof? If you have questions, contact a storm cleanup expert to find out how to make your roof more storm-resistant.

4 Tips for Cleaning Furniture After a Flood

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

Finding water in your home in Aberdeen,MD, can leave you wondering what to do next. No matter the source of the flooding, you may want to figure out a way to get your house back to normal. Working with a residential water remediation team can help you repair your space. This crew of professionals can even help you clean your waterlogged furniture. Keep these tips in mind as you go through the restoration process.

1. Let it dry out

You're likely eager to get your life back to normal after dealing with flooding in your home. However, you cannot generally speed through the restoration process. Your furniture has to completely dry out before you can start repairing it. If you skip this step, you may encourage the growth of mold. Removing the furniture from your house can facilitate drying. Taking pieces apart can also help speed up the drying time.

2. Try to remove contaminants

If the source of the water in your home came from a broken pipe, you might not have to worry about much bacteria or mold spores in the water. However, if the water source was a sewage backup or river overflow, your furniture may have soaked up a few contaminants. Using a cleaning solvent to disinfect the items may be necessary.

3. Use the best cleaning method

While solvents and other cleaners may work well for some pieces of furniture, others may have to be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is often needed for upholstered furniture that has non-colorfast or delicate fabric.

4. Replace broken parts

Some parts of your furnishings may have been soaking in water for an extended period of time. This can wear out parts. Rather than keeping damaged pieces, consider replacing broken or warped items whenever possible.

Not all of your furniture will be able to survive standing water in your home. Knowing how to repair water-damaged furniture can help you feel more confident throughout the remediation process.

Recognizing the Signs of Common Sewage Problems in Your Building

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

Massive sewage backup in a Aberdeen, MD facility

Have you currently had experience with a toilet overflow or a blocked sewer causing several clogged drains? If you have, then your business may be experiencing any number of common sewage problems. For instance, a simple leak may have caused the toilet overflow, while a deteriorated pipe may be causing your consistently clogged drains; however, the real culprit may be impossible to know without professional inspections, but knowing the signs of each type of leak can help a professional narrow down any likely causes.

1. Signs of Common Leaks

Most common leaks stem from leaky faucets or malfunctioning toilet flanges. Common leaks can be some of the easiest to fix and often can be handled without the need to hire a professional. For example, a running toilet can be fixed by replacing the malfunctioning gasket, while tightening or replacing the washer can fix a leaky faucet.

2. Signs of Deteriorated Pipes

The most apparent sign of deteriorated pipes is a blocked sewer or repetitive clogs in your system. Deterioration typically manifest in cast-iron pipes, which leads to the peeling away of the internal coating, and it is this coating that can end up blocking and clogging your drains. If you wish to remedy this kind of issue, you may need the assistance of a certified plumber.

3. Signs of Pipe Collapse

The most extreme sewage problem occurs when a pipe breaks or collapses. A pipe collapse typically occurs underground. Several things to watch out for are dramatic divots in your property, cracks along your foundation, or cracks on your walls and ceilings. As most pipe collapses can cause significant foundation issues, you will want to consult with a certified professional in the Aberdeen,MD , area.

A blocked sewer and other common problems can significantly hinder business operations; however, if you know the signs to look for, it is possible to seek the aid of a professional and resolve any concerns as efficiently as possible.

If your water damage is severe, it would be advisable to keep a record (video or photo) of the damage so that you can get the money you need from your insurance company.

Water Damage Inspection on the Outside
If the roof of your home is impacted by the flood or house fire, a professional will be able to check and see if the roof has missing shingles or if it has collapsed to any extent. Additionally, a professional inspector will know how to properly check your chimney, if you have one. He or she will check the chimney for damage, such as cracks, along with making sure that your gutters are not damaged. The inspector can also examine exterior walls for broken windows, collapses, and any indications that there is exterior leaking (examples would be water entering through sealed windows or areas of foundation damage). This professional will also see if there is water damage in your lawn.

Water Damage Inspection on the Inside
When the inspectors get to the interior of your home during a water damage inspection, they will typically begin at the top of the house and work downwards. They will start with the attic, checking for cracked floors and joists, wet ceilings, insulation with excess water, and ductwork that is bent or distorted. When they get to the rooms within the other parts of your home, they will look for damaged ceilings and drywall, wood that is stained or warped, windows that are cracked, and doors that are unable to properly close. Once they are in the kitchen and the bathroom, they will look at the ceramic fixtures, such as toilets, bathtubs, sinks, and tiles on the floor. In the basement, they will search for issues such as pooling water, stained drywall and carpets, cracked floors and walls. They will also look at personal possessions that may be damaged by water, such as clothes, furniture, appliances, and electronics.

They have moisture sensor probes, which can detect the amount of moisture in your carpets and walls. Additionally, they use infrared thermography devices so that they can check the parts of your home that are not visible.

If you would like to know more about the process, ask your insurance provider.

Storm Floods are the Worst Kind

9/24/2018 (Permalink)

Storm damage in a Riverside, MD home

Officially, flooding from a storm is classified as Category 3. In comparison, if the water pipe coming into your home in Riverside, MD, was to break, that would cause a Category 1 flood. The difference is that the Category 1 flood is clean water and the Category 3 flood is some combination of sewage, sea water, river water and stream water.

Some Aspects of Flood Restoration are the Same Regardless of Category

When it comes to water damage, the difference between categories is their levels of contamination. The damage from the wetness is the same across all categories. The damage is found in:

  • Drywall that needs to be torn out.
  • Insulation that needs to be replaced.
  • Flooring that needs to be removed and discarded
  • Items that need to be restored or replaced.
Category 3 Flood Restoration Presents Special Challenges

The differences between a Category 1 and Category 3 flooding can be seen through a microscope.

Whereas Category 1 water would be relatively clear, Category 3 water would be teeming with bacteria and mold spores. Both categories bring moisture into the home, but the Category 3 flood also seeds it with mold and the nutrients required for growth. This gives the home a virtually instant mold problem.

Category 3 Flood Restoration Requires Immediate Attention

The number one priority in dealing with Category 3 flood damage is to dry out the house as quickly as possible. A totally dry home is not conducive to mold growth. After everything that can be torn out, thrown out or sent out is gone, the goal is to dry out everything that remains. This is where high volume specialty fans come into play. They circulate the air which picks up moisture and takes it outside.

Floods of All Categories Need to Be Addressed Promptly

All categories of flooding are bad. Even the moisture from a Category 1 flood can foster mold growth. With an early start, flood restoration experts can eliminate your flood damage in short order. In the end, that’s what really counts.

How Much Does Mold Damage Cost To Fix?

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

Mold damage from a leak in Aberdeen, MD

There are a wide range of costs for removing mold depending on the type and severity of the problem. The following factors impact the overall cost of mold removal for a residence located in Aberdeen,MD .

How Much Mold is Present

Removal costs are likely to depend on the extent of the growth. A minor growth tends to

  • Cover than 10 square feet
  • Be visible without extensive surface opening
  • Involve a type of mold other than black mold

A major growth, on the other hand, is distinguished by

  • Affecting more than 10 square feet
  • Growing hidden behind walls or under floors
  • Involving Stachybotrys or other risky species

A hygienist or mold specialist can determine the amount and type of mold present in your home. This inspection should last several hours and may cost anywhere from $200 up to $600 or more.

The Type of Mold Growth

A specialist should identify the type of mold before you pursue mold removal. This expert may take

  • Air samples
  • Surface tests with swabs
  • Bulk testing with contents

Analysis of each type of sample may cost anywhere from $30 to $150 to process. The type of mold found may also increase the overall cost of remediation, as in the case of black mold removal.

The Extent of Remediation

Experts may remediate a minor mold problem relatively quickly. This does not mean you should attempt to address a mold problem on your own, as you may spread or expose yourself to spores. A major problem will take more time and may require the removal and replacement of more building materials and contents, which will increase the cost.

Between detection, testing, and remediation costs, you should expect to spend anywhere from $1000 up to $7000 or more. Depending on your insurance coverage or endorsements, you may be able to offset the expense of mold removal and remediation.

How to Minimize Damage to Your Roof

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

This roof suffered significant damage after a recent storm

Of all the part of your office building, the roof should be among the most durable. A high-quality roof should last for decades; however, years of wear and tear from harsh elements and other factors can weaken it. If you detect a roof leak or other damage to your roof, you need to act quickly so the damage doesn’t accelerate and cause more problems.

Inspect It

You should have a qualified professional periodically inspect your company’s roof to ensure it’s in good working order. You can’t always detect issues before the damage is severe, so the inspection process is important. You or a professional in Harford County, MD, should do the following:

• Clear debris from rain gutters.
• Looking for missing shingles.
• Evaluate the soundness of the roof by looking for weak or soft spots.
• Look for holes or other openings where water could find its way into the building.

Cover Affected Areas

If your inspection yields bad news, and you’ve found a damaged roof, you need to cover areas as soon as possible. You can do this with plywood or with tarps. This will help prevent water from getting into the building during rainstorms or snowstorms. This will also help ensure the damaged areas don’t get larger or turn from a roof leak into something more significant.

Repair Quickly

A trained professional in roof cleanup should get your roof ready for restoration. The tart or plywood will do a sufficient job for a time, but it’s vital that you get a competent roofer on the job to replace shingles, repair holes, and handle any other issues your building is facing. The longer you wait to repair the damage, the more likely leaking or other problems will persist.

Over time, a roof leak can develop into a larger problem that could result in disaster. Once you identify the cause of your leak, make sure you follow these steps to avoid more complications.

Smoke, fire and soot are the new normal at your business site in Harford County, MD. After fire damage ravages your commercial building, you think the situation could not possibly get any worse. Unfortunately, you may be wrong. Imagine the remaining contents lost to looting: burglary or vandalism to property left unsecured by a manmade or natural disaster. Additional Benefits To Securing Your Building

In addition to reducing the chance of looting, preventative measures can thwart further destruction from occurring during the fire cleanup process.

• Tarping, boarding or installing plastic sheeting over a hole in the roof prevents damage from the elements. If left open, rains or high wind could cause added loss.

Why Is Your Water Heater Making Noise?

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

Inspect your water heater periodically to avoid your water heater going out and causing water damage in your Harford County home

Hot water is the lifeblood of your morning; it jolts you awake after you begrudgingly drag yourself out of bed. It’s a must have in Harford County, MD, but what if your water heater is making noise? Is there cause for concern? Odds are you just need to do some proper maintenance. Here are some of the more common sounds that you might hear, and how to go about fixing them.

Often a humming noise is caused by the element in your heater loosening over time, a natural occurrence as the water flows around it. Simply tightening things up will solve this problem in a jiff.

Bumping or Knocking

This isn’t actually coming from your unit, but rather the pipes in your walls moving as the heater starts up or turns off. There’s no issue here for your heater, but you should have someone check out your pipes to avoid wall damage in the future.

Rumbling and Popping

If you hear a rumble or pop coming from your water heater, it’s likely that some amount of sediment has cooled and settled toward the bottom of the element. When the hot water is forced through the sediment that’s gathered, it creates that sort of crackling sound. Simple maintenance should solve this problem, which is more common in older units than their more modern counterparts. A simple water heater flush should clear out that sediment, and the sounds should go away as a result.

These are the most common noises you’ll hear from your heating unit, but a number of other things can arise as your appliance progresses through the natural wear and tear of daily use. Sediment is naturally going to gather in your heater, but you can also prevent the accumulation through a number of other ways — like a water softener installed in your water line, for example.

The noises you’ll hear coming from your water heater often aren’t dangerous, but instead are indications that you should give it some proper care. Use the tips above to see what steps you should take, and don’t ever hesitate to reach out to trained professionals for additional help.

What Should You Throw Away After a Flood?

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

Drywall and Flooring Mold Damage

Sifting through your precious belongings after a flood in Harford County, MD, is a difficult thing to do. It can be emotional and exhausting to figure out what you have to throw away and what you can keep. Once the water damage has been assessed, content cleaning must begin immediately. Here are a few tips as you start the cleanup process:

1. Beware black water – There are three classifications of water damage and this is the most severe. Whether the source is a nearby flooded river or a sewage overflow in your residence, black water is heavily contaminated and has serious health risks if ingested.

2. Throw away appliances with insulation – In the process of content cleaning, appliances such as refrigerators, stoves and washing machines may need to be discarded because they contain insulation that can carry mold.

3. Toss porous materials – Carpet, wood, and paper are places where contaminants like mold can hide. Because mold can spread within two to three days, these materials should be thrown away immediately.

4. Determine what can be saved – You can save anything that is nonporous as long as it isn’t too damaged, so anything made of glass, ceramic, plastic or metal can be kept. These items do, however, need content cleaning well.

Remember that any kind of moisture can encourage mold growth, so it’s important to reduce the risk of further damage by throwing away anything that can harbor mold or unsafe microbes. Even if your belongings look okay, spores can go undetected to the human eye. It’s also important to remove any items that come into contact with wet carpet and remove excess water in any place you can.

It can be a daunting process to go through your residence after a flood. It’s good to know what you can keep and what should be thrown away so that you can move on with restoring your home to a clean, livable condition.

Effective Ways to Get Rid of Dryer Lint

7/23/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning your dryer vent will help ensure your home is safe from a lint fire

Excess dryer lint: It’s a problem just about everyone deals with, but it can be much more serious than you may think. Over time, your dryer will collect lint from your apparel as well as towels, blankets and anything else you wash and dry. If you neglect to dispose of these materials and clean out the dryer exhaust, a lint fire could result in your Harford County, MD, home. The consequences of this could be disastrous. Fortunately, there are some basic ways you can handle this situation and avoid catastrophe.

Clean the Screen

The simplest ways to clean lint from your dryer and stave off the risk of a dryer fire is to clean the lint screen. Depending on the type of dryer you have, you can find this at the top of your dryer or even inside the door or on the side.

* Gently pull out the screen; do not bend.
* Run your hands across the screen and collect the lint; discard it.
* Vacuum the surface of the screen.
* Rinse the screen with water.

Clean Inside the Trap

Often, cleaning off the screen isn’t enough to avoid the risk of fire damage. It’s a good idea to regularly clean out the trap as well. It’s easy for lint to get trapped in this area, so take a vacuum and suction out any remaining debris. Make sure you get your vacuum hose and attachment as far down the trap as possible.

Clean the Exhaust Hose

Another important way to reduce the risk of a lint fire is to unplug your dryer and remove the exhaust hose. You can then vacuum inside the hose or use a long brush to remove lint that may be stuck far inside. Make sure when you put the hose back on that it’s secure.

If you follow these steps, you can help ensure you won’t have a lint fire in your Harford County, MD, home. Cleaning your dryer regularly is an essential way to stay safe.

3 Mold Prevention Facts That Nobody Told You

7/18/2018 (Permalink)

Drywall Mold Damage

Tired of trying the same mold prevention methods as everyone else in Harford County, MD? Here’s why they aren’t working and why you shouldn’t wait too long to deal with water damage.

1. Ventilation Systems Only Work Before Mold Forms

After mold has formed and dried up, its cellular legs become exposed, allowing them to fly through the air like a dandelion seed. Mold can be “planted” once again or remain dormant until it finds a suitable area to grow. Turning on a ventilation system may pull dried mold throughout your building, allowing it to spread. Always stop your ventilation system if you’ve had a mold outbreak.

2. Mold Can Still Spread With Mold-Resistant Materials

When a product like drywall or sheetrock claims to be mold-resistant, it may give you the impression that it completely prevents mold growth. This is simply not true, especially if you’ve already had a mold outbreak and the spores were allowed to spread throughout the building. If the building materials are exposed to moisture for prolonged periods of time, mold can survive on them temporarily until it dries up or finds a better area to settle in the building.

3. The Basement Isn’t Your Only Priority

After water damage, most folks focus their mold prevention efforts only on the inside of a basement, draining it and placing humidifiers throughout. However, before a basement becomes flooded, the water has to come in from the ground around it. If your building isn’t naturally elevated, excess rain water may try to escape directly to the basement.

You may need a professional restoration service to rework the walls in your basement and lay tile lines under the ground around your building. They can guide rainwater away from the basement to help prevent it from entering the building and creating mold.

If you have water damage in Harford County, MD, don’t wait to deal with it until mold settles in. The key to preventing mold growth is to act quickly and mitigate further damage by restoring the area of your property that has been affected.

Hidden Fire Hazards in Your Havre De Grace Home

6/28/2018 (Permalink)

Check the Wiring and Watch the Food Cooking

Your Havre De Grace House has Hidden Fire Damage Opportunities.

Are you aware there are common household fire hazards, such as candles, hot plates, and electrical issues that may lead to fire damage in your Bel Air home? There are other sources of potential fire danger that could be lurking in your home.

Microwaves- A simple microwave malfunction could spark a fast, hot burning flame. Keep your microwave clean, use only microwave-safe dishes and never attempt repairs yourself.
Batteries- Batteries possess a weak electrical charge, giving them the potential to spark a flame. 9 volt batteries are the most likely type to spark a fire due to the short area between terminals. For safe storage, use a battery case, keep them in the original package and never store near metal items.
Light bulbs- Using a light bulb with too high of wattage for a fixture can pose a serious fire hazard leading to fire damage in your Bel Air home. It is easy to avoid this danger by locating the bulb wattage recommendation label, and if none is advised, a bulb under 60 watts is considered safe.
Dryer Lint- Clean the lint trap of your clothing dryer after every use. Built up lint deposits can provide tinder for a quick-burning fire, so ensure that your ventilation duct is also free of debris.
Stacks of magazines and/or newspapers- Any paper can pose a fire hazard if stored too closely to heating sources. For safety's sake, avoid collecting large amounts of paper in ill-organized stacks.
Electric blankets and heating pads- Old or frayed wires on electric blankets or heating pads can ignite a fire when in close proximity to beds and sheets. Inspect cords regularly, operate at the lowest comfortable setting and never leave unattended.
Barbeque Charcoal can easily ignite in storage, should it become damp. Store in a sealed container away from moisture, heat and light to avoid a fire and its result--fire damage.
Cluttered closets- Piles of clutter that may come into contact with closet light fixtures can ignite unexpectedly. Keep things tidy and well away from light fixtures.
Dust- Dust deposits around electronics, wires, outlets or heat sources may provide enough matter to ignite a fire. Regularly vacuum or dust around areas where dust buildup may come into contact with heat.
Outdated appliances- Old wires and worn insulation are the perfect breeding ground for fire damage to nearby items.  Periodically inspection older appliances to check the integrity of wiring and connections.

Churchville Fire Damage Prevention Tips from SERVPRO

Electrical Wires. In most residential properties, the cause of an accidental fire is electricity. Appliances that are plugged into your wall outlets are the most prevalent danger. Electrical arcing can send a spark into adjacent flammable material like a pillow resulting in a fire. However, one of the hidden causes of fire is arcing in electrical wiring. In fact, your home contains hundreds of feet of this wiring running down the interior of walls, attic spaces or basements and crawlspaces. Rodents that gnaw on insulation can expose the wiring. A screw or nail that is carelessly driven into your wall for picture hanging can puncture the wiring, thereby creating a significant fire hazard and possible electrocution. As reported by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), electrical fires make up over 50,000 home fires every year, many resulting in significant fire damage.

The Laundry Room. Another hidden fire hazard is the laundry room or clothes dryer area. Clothes dryers collect lint during the drying process. Although many homeowners clean their lint trap regularly (should be cleaned before each use), this is not always enough to prevent a hidden fire mishap. The duct work leading to the exterior exhaust vent should both be inspected to allow unrestricted air movement. The dryer housing, which contains the heating elements, should be vacuumed to keep out the combustible lint. Of course, the clothes dryer must be connected to a UI approved outlet and amp load.

Household Appliances. All smaller electrical household appliances could be hidden fire dangers if not used, cleaned, and stored safely. Toasters and coffee makers should be kept free of debris and unplugged when not in use. SERVPRO suggests that you pay special attention to allow heat dissipation from the bottom of your laptop computer. Common sense works. Hair dryers and bathtubs are a deadly combination that not only can lead to fire damage but also death.

Let The Professionals Of SERVPRO Assist You. Although being aware of fire hazards can reduce your susceptibility to an unwanted incendiary event, there is still a chance that your property could go up in flames. Be careful, cautious, and safe. However, if you require high-quality fire damage restoration services for your Churchville home, call us for help. All of our IICRC-certified technicians will offer you the detail-oriented, customer-first services that you deserve, and we will always aim for your best interests.

What Do You Do After Sewage Damage?

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Professional cleaning and sanitizing after a sewage backup

Damage that results from an overflowing sewer isn’t just annoying; it’s unsanitary, and it can be hazardous. Sewer cleanup is normally better left to the professionals, since there is a possibility of airborne contaminants and other health hazards. You might be able to clean a bathroom floor after a flooded toilet incident, but raw sewage water is a different thing altogether.

How To Tell Which Type of Cleanup You’ll Need

There are different categories of water:

• Category 1 water comes from a sanitary source of clean water. For instance, this water could come from your kitchen faucet.
• Category 2 water is usually contaminated. Water coming from a toilet overflow, your dishwasher, or your washing machine could fit into this category.
• Category 3 water is grossly contaminated. This water could cause illness or even death because the water might carry organic matter, microbes and silt. Water coming from an overflowing toilet with feces in it or from a sewer backup might be considered category 3.

Establishing which type of sewer cleanup you need is important. You might be able to handle category 1 water by yourself, but for a more serious spill in Harford County, MD, you likely need professional help.

How Cleaning Up Works

Once the category has been established, cleanup can begin. The first thing to do is shut off your water, but don’t touch any electric or submerged appliances. You must also make sure that your electric and gas services are shut off.

Wear protective clothing, which can sometimes be required and might even need to include a protective face mask. All the dirt, soil and particles from the water should be removed, and any items that might be saved should be rinsed with hot water and then disinfected.

The areas affected need to be sanitized and aired out. It’s important to not turn on the AC during cleanup, since contaminated water may get into the unit.

Sewer cleanup can be difficult to deal with due to how hazardous it can be. Make sure to reach out for professional help if you think you might need it.

4 Tips for Responding to Commercial Water Damage

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Loss in Harford County

Floodwater, rainwater, or a pipe burst situation can all leave your business property damaged. Before further steps can be taken to remedy the situation, the entire building must be dried out. Only once the drying procedures have been completed can further plans for repair and restoration be undertaken. Review the following cleanup and damage tips to get started.

Tip One: Focus on Safety

There are several health and safety concerns to bear in mind for yourself, your clients, and your employees. Power lines may be live; natural gas appliances may be leaking; floodwaters may be contaminated by waste or sewage. Protecting safety is probably the most important of remediation and damage tips. At all times during cleanup efforts, be sure to wear gloves and protect your mouth and eyes.

Tip Two: Understand How Water Causes Damage

There are three ways water leads to property damage. It's important to understand all of them to effectively and thoroughly dry the building.

• Direct damage happens when wood warps, wallboard falls apart, and electrical parts malfunction.

• Contaminants affect nearly everything in the flood path. Mud, sewage, and unknown contaminants lead to dirty, unhealthy conditions.

• Moisture often goes unseen and continues to promote damage, including dry rot.

Tip Three: Use Natural Ventilation as Much as Possible

When your building is soaking wet, you may believe the best solution is to dry it out as quickly as possible. However, some drying methods can cause even more damage than the flooding caused. A hot air power drying system is especially dangerous for older buildings. Before renting this type of equipment, open all the windows in the building and let natural evaporation and air flow provide consistent drying. Learn more cleaning tips before proceeding.

Tip Four: Contact a Professional

In the best-case scenario, cleaning up after a flood is an overwhelming task. In the worst cases, the job is dangerous and hazardous to your health. Professionals have the equipment and training necessary to complete the work safely and completely. They may also share damage tips appropriate for Harford County, MD.

What Is That Smell? Removing Bad Odors After a Flood

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

After flood water recedes in Harford County, MD, sometimes unpleasant odors are left behind in commercial buildings. Unless addressed properly, these odors can linger, which can make getting back to business difficult. However, it does not have to be this way. These three tips can help get your building back to normal after a flood.

Tip 1: Prevent Fungus Growth

Some of the primary causes of unappealing smells after a flood are mildew and mold growth, which can occur if carpets, walls, and upholsteries are left damp for a long period of time. After a flood, there are a few things you can to stop the process:

• Remove water from carpets with a wet vacuum to begin the drying process.
• Run dehumidifiers.
• Increase circulation in the room with fans.

The quicker you can get your commercial building dry, the less mildew and mold growth will occur.

Tip 2: Try a Natural Approach

Some of the best post-flood odor removers are common household products. There are many different cleaning solutions you can use to remove odor, but sometimes the simplest are the best:

• One part white vinegar mixed with two parts warm water is an effective odor-removal spray for curtains.
• Baking soda poured directly onto carpet can help absorb smells, exactly like it does in the refrigerator.
• Unused kitty litter is also an effective odor absorber when left in bowls around the room.

These often-overlooked items may help to get rid of an unwelcome smell.

Tip 3: Know When To Call a Professional

Sometimes, even after you have tried all of these tips, an odor can linger longer. This may be caused by sewage loss during a flood, which can cause an overgrowth of odor-causing bacteria. This can be resolved with the help of flood reparation professionals, who have special equipment to sanitize the items in your commercial building, killing these bacteria and stopping mold in its tracks.

Calling professionals can help you to get your commercial building up and running after a natural disaster. Rely on their assistance and these tips to eliminate mold growth and make your commercial building safe and odor-free.

A Fun Mold Experiment

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Harford County for a mold estimate at tel:(410) 679-6260

Mold can easily grow within 24 to 48 hours after a water damage occurs. It begins to colonize in 1 to 12 days! SERVPRO of Harford County decided to put this to the test...

The photos on the left represent the control group. The pieces of drywall pictured encountered zero excess moisture.

The photos in the center mimic a water damage that occurs during the winter months and goes undiscovered until the spring when weather warms up and mold spores reach their "happy" place (70+ degrees). These pieces of drywall were submerged in water for ten minutes then placed in Ziploc bags to observe.

The column of pictures on the right represents a DIY water mitigation job. This happens more than you would think. A homeowner dries and cleans the water damage on their own without the help of a professional. Approaching a water damage this way often leads to the structure not being fully dried and susceptible to mold growth. These pieces of drywall were submerged in water for 30 seconds and then placed in the Ziploc bags for observation.

The results are right on. Mold growth was seen a mere 7 days after encountering moisture... and after 4 weeks?!? No thank you! It's of utmost importance to have water mitigated correctly after a loss. But, if it's not, we are here for you as well. Mold mitigation just happens to be one of SERVPRO of Harford County specialties.

Post Fire Water Cleanup

5/29/2018 (Permalink)

When cleaning up after a fire there are damages from the flames, smoke, soot, and water from fire fighting efforts

Water cleanup after a fire in Harford County, MD, can sometimes cause more stress than the fire itself. If the fire department gets to your home early enough, the fire may be put out before it can cause too much damage. The damage done during this period, however, can still be extremely costly.

Damage Caused by Water

A fire hose can spray 90 gallons per minute at a force great enough to crush simple furniture, and sometimes a firefighter will have to break through windows, walls, or doors. Water from a fire hose can also cause lasting damage if left alone. It can discolor furniture, build mildew in the walls or rugs, and cause mold to grow on carpet and furniture. Damage to second floors can create sagging areas that need to be carefully worked around until structural repairs can be made.

Tips for Water Cleanup After a Fire

If a fire damaged your commercial building, follow these water and smoke cleanup steps:

• Always have a professional service worker examine electronics and appliances that have been exposed to water before attempting to use them in post fire cleanup.
• Open windows and place fans as needed to properly ventilate carpet and furniture, and help speed up the drying process.
• Separate clothing and fabric for easier drying, and send a small sample for professional cleaning to get rid of the smoke smell. A test sample will tell you whether or not your clothing is salvageable, or if you need to throw out damaged items.
• Dry out furniture by opening drawers and cabinets, unless they’re stuck. Forcing swollen drawers to open could cause worse damage.

Water cleanup can feel like an enormous task, especially if the damage extends throughout your home, but there are a variety of ways to make cleanup semi-painless, including reaching out to fire restoration professionals. Always carefully go through your belongings to salvage whatever possible as soon as it’s safe, and ventilate your home to help dry residual water and air out smoke.

When Bread Goes Bad: Why Mold Grows on Food

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow on food after sitting in the cabinet for a long period of time

When Bread Goes Bad: Why Mold Grows on Food

It may not be a surprise to you when you find mold growing in the grout in your shower. Then you open your bread box to make a sandwich, and you see bread mold there too! Before you decide to pack up and move from your moldy home in Harford County, MD, keep in mind that mold is everywhere you go. All it needs is a warm, moist place to grow and something to eat. Bread supplies all the necessary criteria.

The Mold Trifecta

Bread is a comfort food for humans and mold alike. The same qualities that make it a delicious snack to people make it a nice home for mold. Bread contains three characteristics that mold needs to thrive:

• Moisture
• Warmth
• Organic Matter

Bread mold needs moisture, and compared to other surfaces in your house, your bread box can hold in a great deal of dampness. The air in the bread box is also relatively warm and lacking in air flow. Finally, the ingredients in bread are all organic matter that mold loves to feed on. These three criteria combine to make bread a homey place for mold growth.

Lurking Mold

Just because a place is a little cooler doesn’t mean mold won’t grow there. Fridge mold is common with foods that have been left too long or are more exposed to wet air. Condensation that builds up in your fridge can also contribute to mold issues that, if left unchecked, may require a mold remediation specialist to overcome. The fungus growth in your fridge can spread from food to food if you aren’t careful.

Mold spores in the air land and grow wherever they find a hospitable home. Bread mold on your loaf in the bread box can be an indication that your home may be too humid or that some moisture issue persists, but it also may just mean you need to consume your bread more quickly before it has time to go moldy.

Family Pets and Fires: What You Need To Know

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Fire emergency in Harford County can be scary for your family pets

Avoiding a fire emergency in Harford County, MD, begins with efforts to prevent your pets from starting fires. Cats and dogs can inadvertently start a fire in your home in these ways:

? Loose pets are naturally curious and may chew on or play with electrical cords.
? Stove knobs can accidentally be turned on by a jumping dog.
? Cats are infamous for knocking items over, including burning candles.

Before you leave your furry friends home alone, secure pets in crates or with baby gates, remove stove knobs, and extinguish candles. Practicing common pet safety is an easy way to partake in fire prevention.

Before a Fire

While you can do your best to stop your pet from starting a fire, fires still occur for other reasons. It’s crucial to take steps with pet preparation in case a fire emergency does happen. Be sure all important pet items are placed in a fireproof safe, including vet records, proof of vaccinations, and any medications. Finding several pet-friendly places to stay, in the event you are dislocated from your home as a result of a fire, should be part of your pet preparation plan. Finally, training can play an important role in pet safety related to fires. Teaching your dog to come when called may help you locate your pet during an emergency. Be sure to keep collars on your pets when you are not home and leave leashes where they are easily accessible.

After a Fire

Cleaning up after a fire can be a daunting process. A professional company can speed things along to get your house back to pre-fire condition as quickly as possible. This is often the best way to ensure that your home is completely free of visible fire damage, as well as invisible damage such as smoke or odors. A fire restoration company can also resolve any water damage.

A fire emergency can be devastating in Harford County, MD. However, working with a reputable fire cleanup and restoration company makes the disaster aftermath much easier.

3 Important Facts About Commercial Mold Insurance Coverage

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

Mold damage in Aberdeen Commercial Property

Your Aberdeen, MD, commercial building does not have to suffer a major flood to develop mold. Even minor indoor floods or slow leaks can cause mold to grow. Commercial insurance can help you recover from damage caused by fungi; however, there are a few facts you may want to learn about this coverage before you file a claim.

1. Most Water Damage Claims Are Covered

Because most types of indoor mold form due to hidden leaks, water pipe breaks or carpeting that is improperly dried after a flood, most claims that spring from water damage are typically covered by commercial insurance. If a building’s fire safety equipment should spring a leak and cause mold growth where it is not detected until months later, this instance is usually covered as well. You may want to review your policy with a qualified insurance agent to ensure floods caused by natural disasters are covered as well.

2. Restoration Costs Are Usually Included in Coverage

If your commercial property suffers enough mold damage that walls, ceilings or floors must be torn out and replaced, your policy will likely cover the cost of these repairs. For example, if mold develops in the ceiling because of a slow leak in the roof, your coverage would likely pay for a mold mitigation and removal company to come in and resolve the issue. However, you may want to check to see if there is a cap on these costs before you file a claim.

3. There May Be Exceptions to Coverage

While mold insurance typically covers many different instances of mold damage, there may be some exceptions to your policy. Some companies may not cover damage resulting from owner negligence, such as a failure to maintain a building’s plumbing system. Some may limit the amount they cover per policy year, so it is important to read the fine print on your coverage.

Commercial insurance typically covers mold damage stemming from a water mishap in your Aberdeen, MD, building. However, because there are exceptions, you may want to review your policy at least once a year to ensure you have all the coverage you need.

A Guide To Preparing Your Home for a Flood

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

When disaster strikes SERVPRO is reliable and ready to respond

When the threat of an impending storm is approaching your Aberdeen, MD, home, it can be difficult to maintain your composure and stay focused enough to prepare your home for flood water. Therefore, it’s important to create a flood preparedness plan for your property ahead of time that can help prevent excess water damage when disaster strikes. Read on to discover how to safeguard your home in the event of a massive storm, giving yourself a go-to resource to use when your adrenaline is overtaking your ability to think and act accordingly.

? Elevate the important interior and exterior components of your home. The first thing flooding can damage is your home’s electrical systems and your various appliances. Therefore, it’s crucial to raise items like your water heater, furnace and electrical panel to higher levels in your home, if possible. If there’s time, contact a professional for help with this matter.

? Invest in check valves to install into your plumbing. A check valve can help prevent any potential flood water from backing up into your home through your drains. If this option isn’t feasible, acquiring large-scale stoppers or corks to plug your tubs, sinks, etc. can be highly valuable.

? Make or restock an existing emergency kit. Keeping things like common medications, bandages, bottled water, non-perishable foods and more in an easy-to-grab storage container or sealed bag can be a life-saving preventative measure for you and your family.

? Line up sandbags around your home. While this presumably isn’t an option if you only have hours left to prepare for an impending storm, filling up sandbags and placing them around your home’s perimeter in the days before a major weather event can help prevent your property from becoming a flooded building.

Controlling your emotions under the threat of an oncoming natural disaster in Aberdeen, MD, can be hard to do. Therefore, having a reliable and handy preparedness plan to protect your home from flood water is key to ensuring you and your family are safe as well as safeguarding your property against maximum water damage.

HVAC Cleaning Services

4/6/2018 (Permalink)

by NADCA (North American Duct Cleaning Association)

SERVPRO of Harford County have been members since 2015

In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, there are several other factors that can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning: pets, occupants with allergies or asthma, cigarette or cigar smoke, water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system, and home renovation or remodeling projects.

Indoor air quality is one concern that homeowners have when they decide to investigate air duct cleaning. Your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and breathes air out.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system.

Applying industry knowledge to a real life situation

Before a couple moved into their newly purchased home, they had mold mitigation services preformed before closing. After 5 years they were afraid that the mold had come back because of ongoing sickness in the family. SERVPRO of Harford County came out and informed them that it was, in fact, not mold but a vent cleaning problem. After cleaning out the ducts in their home, the family felt much better and the constant sickness subsided. They stated that they could tell a difference instantly.

Wanda and Elenor have worked for SERVPRO 37 Years!

Wanda and Elenor holding up a signed thank you poster.

What makes a SERVPRO Crew Chief show up for work 37 years, and counting? Just one little comment…

Wanda Albright, and her sister, Eleanor “Sissy” Helmick, have been SERVPRO of East Harford County Crew Chiefs for nearly four decades, through countless restoration industry changes and three different franchise owners, giving their all for customers and co-workers, too!

Since 1981, this dedicated pair have seen many changes in the restoration industry, and drastic growth for the company, but their focus remains the same: on those experiencing stress and trauma from damages to their homes. Wanda sums up her work’s greatest reward, helping customers and their homes return to normalcy, “I just love going into a home where it’s a disaster and I make it perfect… I like to make a difference.”

Owners Jim and Trish Wall, SERVPRO of East Harford County; SERVPRO of Hunt Valley / Lutherville; and SERVPRO of Bel Air, understand employees are what makes a business great, and Wanda and Sis are, no doubt, exceptional in their dedication to customer, company, and team. “Throughout their 38+ year careers, Wanda and Sissy have always dreamed of visiting the corporate headquarters, so this past January, we made their dreams come true with an anniversary trip to Tennessee. With the help of our East Harford County General Manager, Toni Townsley, Wanda and Sissy visited SERVPRO Industries, Inc. headquarters, toured the facility, met several corporate employees, and made the SERVPRO TV news in a segment dedicated to them!” Then to top off the fun, the pair spent two nights downtown, enjoying themselves and the sights and sounds of Nashville. It was quite a memorable trip and well-deserved for such dedicated and loyal people.

And while recognition of their accomplishments and acknowledgment of their dedication is surely important to good employee morale, what exactly could keep these crew chiefs coming back year-after-year to the very same job? According to Sis Helmick, just one thing… “It makes me feel good. It makes me feel proud when someone comes to me and tells me ‘Thank you so much. You’ve helped us tremendously.’ That’s what I do it for. That one little comment.”

How do home and business fires differ?

3/26/2018 (Permalink)

How can the fire damage be different between a business location and your own personal dwelling? Here's how.

Fire in Home

Your personal belongings will most likely have more sentimental attachment involved. This means fire damage restoration needs to happen quickly to keep those items in tact. The unfortunate thing about a fire is people typically wait too long to address the restoration process. The carpet will require soot damage removal. That way the smoke smell doesn't inhabit your home for years to come. Professionals can also clean walls and roofs during the fire restoration process. This gets your personal dwelling back to pre-fire condition. A fire in home can disrupt your normal life because you may have to find a different place to live. You may have to find an apartment during fire cleanup but insurance may cover that. The good news is during that period more can potentially be salvaged during the fire damage restoration process.

Fire in Business

Why is commercial fire damage so costly? A fire in business could be detrimental. The clock continues to tick every second the business owner doesn't have a storefront. With each second, the store owner feels as if he or is she is losing money. Most business operations depend on a storefront to make money. Customers need to be able to shop. This is true especially in the world of retail. Many other industries also need a place where potential customers can be welcomed in. Restaurants, financial industries, pharmacies and gas stations are all examples of businesses that would lose large chunks of money in a commercial fire damage loss.

Clients won't be able to visit an office so the price tag for commercial fire damage could be immense if fire restoration isn't a quick process. Machines may need to be cleansed. Walls and roofs can be exposed with soot damage. The smoke smell could be hard to erase. Fire cleanup by professionals can provide a business owner the opportunity to quickly get back on their feet and open those doors to customers.

Most business owners have insurance. This means fire restoration is a must with commercial fire damage. The fire cleanup is a necessity to get the business back running.

How To Sort Through Wet Items After a Flood

3/24/2018 (Permalink)

Flooding in Edgewood Home

Not all flood water in a home is caused by heavy rains or storms. A sudden flood could occur in your Edgewood, MD, home as the result of a broken washing machine or a burst pipe during cold weather. When flooding happens, it can be difficult to know how to handle your water-damaged items. From furniture to toys and more, the drying and restoration process can be different for each object, but there are a few strategies you can use for sorting them safely.

Prepare a Drying Room

Having a room to dry soaked items properly can help prevent further damage, especially to fragile items like books and documents. Set up a dry cleaning room before you sort, and create an environment that includes the following:

" Low humidity
" Oscillating fans
" Little to no exposure to sunlight

Having a drying room can help you sort belongings with more efficiency and get the drying process started faster after a broken pipe or leaky washer causes a flood.

Sort Items by Material

Sorting items by their material can help you assess the worst of the damage. Metal objects, for example, will probably have suffered the least amount of harm from water in the home and can be dried, then sanitized. Porous items, like plastic toys and wooden objects, may suffer discoloration or warping after a flood. A flood cleanup and restoration company can advise you on whether furniture can be salvaged or repaired.

Treat Photos With Care

Sorting and salvaging photographs can be difficult, but it is possible to save them with a bit of patience. If photos are stuck together, do not pull them apart. Soak them in tepid water until they separate, and then dry them face up in your drying room. The low humidity can help prevent curling and fading.

Floods can happen in your Edgewood, MD, home for a variety of reasons. Knowing the best practices for sorting and salvaging wet items after water in a home causes damage may help you prevent further harm to family heirlooms and reduce loss.

Can Beloved Possessions Be Restored After Black Mold Damage?

3/24/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Cleaning in Aberdeen Home

Black mold can be devastating. Whether it’s a result of a flooding event or an ongoing problem with high humidity, the destruction of your home’s building materials can pale in comparison to the loss of personal possessions. While drywall and flooring can be replaced by a good contractor, an old photograph or beloved leather sofa may not be so easy to replace. However, mold cleaning services are available. A reliable mold remediation service in Aberdeen, MD, can help.

You may be surprised by how many of your possessions can be saved. Cleaning and restoration are available for:

• Electronics
• Clothing
• Leather Goods
• Furniture
• Paintings
• Documents
• Photographs

Depending on how extensive the initial damage is, it may not be possible to restore items to perfect condition. However, sentimental items, such as photographs or important documents, may be restored to a state that is more acceptable than throwing the items out.

How Are Items Restored?

Mold cleaning professionals have a host of cleaning and disinfecting techniques available to them that are difficult or impossible to duplicate at home. These include:

• Immersion cleaning
• Abrasive cleaning
• Spray cleaning
• Foam cleaning
• Dry cleaning
• Wet cleaning

They also have industrial grade equipment to dry and dehumidify items, gamma irradiation to sterilize them and freeze-drying equipment to prevent further damage to delicate items, such as photographs. They can also digitize damaged documents so their contents are fully preserved.

What Should You Restore?

Whether a possession is worth restoring will depend on how extensive the mold damage is, how much it would cost to replace and how important it is to you. A one-of-a-kind photograph can’t be replaced and may be worth saving, even with minor signs of damage. On the other hand, it may be better to replace a favorite recliner that’s suffered extensive damage.

If your possessions have been damaged by mold, mold cleaning services in Aberdeen, MD, are available. While it may be better to replace some things, your most beloved possessions can be restored.

Taking Care of Your Business’s Leaky Roof the Right Way

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Loss

Having a leaky roof isn’t just bad for business – it’s also likely to have long-term effects on other parts of your commercial building if left untreated for long enough. That’s why taking care of your roof leak quickly and correctly is important to your business’s future. In order to get things done the right way, there are a few key steps you should follow, including:

• Tearing out wet, damaged materials
• Drying and disinfecting the affected areas
• Having your roof and ceiling professionally restored

Following these steps can sometimes be a lengthy process, but it’s the best way to get your Edgewood, MA, business back in operational order as quickly as possible.

Out With the Old

If you have carpets, walls or other materials that have been damaged by your existing roof leak, the best thing you can do is tear them out and replace them. Wet materials – especially carpets, rugs and other fabric pieces – are prone to developing mold growth, which presents its own unique challenges. It’s best to nip the problem in the bud and stop mold growth before it ever has a chance to begin.

Disinfectant Is Key

While most rainwater is harmless, some may contain harmful bacteria – especially if it’s been sitting there for a while. Disinfecting areas that have been in contact with your leak is important for suppressing both mold growth and bacterial illnesses during the cleanup and restoration process and is easy to do with the right tools and know-how.

Professional Assistance

When it comes to missing shingles and an otherwise damaged roof, you could try and take on the challenge of repairs yourself, but why would you? Hiring a team of professionals is much safer, is affordable, and means your roof will be getting the care it really needs and deserves, thanks to the regulations that all professional crews have to adhere to.

Following these simple steps can help you take care of that pesky roof leak at your commercial property in no time, so you can focus on business and not on the status of your roof.

Mold Prevention Tips for When You Rent

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

Just because you don’t own your property doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t maintain it and take measures to keep it in a safe, clean and healthy condition. In addition to cleaning your building regularly and informing the landlord of any pressing issues such as water damage, you should also develop and act upon a mold prevention plan. Mold growth can happen quickly, which is why prevention is key. If you’re not sure how you can give your landlord a hand in the maintenance of his or her property, keep the following tips from your Riverside, Maryland, mold experts and the CDC in mind:

• Know where mold can develop. Mold grows anywhere there is moisture and lack of sunlight, which may include in windowsills, air ducts, doorways, vents and the carpet.
• Be on the lookout for moisture buildup and water damage. If water is allowed to sit for even 24 hours, it could spur mold growth.
• Keep the space properly ventilated and humidity levels between 30 and 60 percent. If necessary, invest in a dehumidifier, or ask your landlord for one.
• Inform your landlord of any leaks in the home’s roof, walls or plumbing. It is the landlords’ responsibility to fix such issues, and if they don’t, they could be in legal trouble for failing to maintain a healthy working environment.
• Mold prevention begins with cleaning. Keep the property clean, and pay particular attention to the bathroom and break room.

What To Do If You Discover Mold

If you take all the above prevention measures and still discover mold on the property, inform your landlord. It is your landlord’s responsibility to contact a Riverside, Maryland, mold remediation company to come in and fix the problem. If your landlord fails to act, reach out to the experts yourself and talk to an attorney about your legal options. If the mold is the result of the landlord’s failure to maintain the property, you may be able to put your rent in escrow until he or she pays you back for the cost of remediation.

The best thing you can do is to prevent mold from growing in the first place. Use the above mold prevention tips to keep your rental home a safe and healthy place to live.

Cleaning Up Your Contents After a Fire

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Recovering from a fire is never an easy task. Even if you managed to contain it to one room or space of the building, the smoke can easily reach other areas and cause damage. Cleaning up can be a daunting and emotional task. Keep these tips in mind as you proceed.

Before entering the building, ensure that it is safe. Document all damage. Start cleaning and repairing what you can. Remember that professional assistance is available in Perryman, Maryland, for those tasks you can’t handle on your own, such as dry-cleaning.

Smoke can leave a distinctly unpleasant odor. The following supplies can help eliminate odor from different items on your property:

• Vinegar
• Baking soda
• Fresh air
• Ozone generators
• Activated charcoal

Content cleaning may need to be done in several stages. Remove as many items as possible from the building while damage is being fixed. Furniture and inventory may absorb odors by simply being inside. Rent a content storage unit and put supplies there until you can deal with them.

Any lamps or ceramic items should probably be cleaned as normal at first. If a deeper clean is necessary, you can use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and soapy water. If you have any clothing that was in the building during the fire, it may require dry-cleaning services.

For bigger projects, you might consider hiring a fire restoration professional. If you own a business, you want to get back to normal as soon as possible. You also want to make sure you are maintaining a safe environment for your employees, customers and clients.

Cleaning up after a fire can be overwhelming, so take things one step at a time. Develop a plan for dealing with the structural damage. Remove inventory, furniture and other items. Hire dry-cleaning services to restore any fabrics damaged by smoke or soot. Bring in the specialists for a more thorough job.

How to Properly Clean Your Belongings After a Fire

2/4/2018 (Permalink)

If you’ve had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a fire in your Edgewood, Maryland, home, you may now be focused on the aftermath of it all, which involves salvaging your belongings. Some people assume they must throw out their clothes, books, and other items simply because they smell like smoke, but that isn’t always the case. Although the smell is bothersome, dry cleaning is one of several ways to remove the odor and restore items.

Have Your Clothes Professionally Washed

If you’ve tried washing clothes in laundry detergent and the scent still lingers, you may want to consider enlisting help from professionals. Rather than attempting to remove the odor and any stains from your shirts, pants, and other accessories, bring the items to the dry cleaning company where experts can use various products that are meant to clean and deodorize clothes.

Use a Scrub Brush

When you’re trying to complete a thorough content cleaning of some of your other belongings, consider using a scrub brush to scrub away at any of the soot that may be left behind on items. It’s possible to use a scrub brush on many products, such as:

* Tables
* Chairs
* Bureaus
* Nightstands
* Hardback books

Before you start scrubbing, it’s wise to put a mask on that will cover both your mouth and your nose so that you’re not breathing in the heavy scent of smoke while focusing on the cleaning process.

If there are a lot of items that must be cleaned but you don’t have time to take care of it all in one day, you could consider checking out content storage options in Edgewood, Maryland. Storage facilities may allow you to put those items away until you’re ready to give them the thorough cleaning they need.

After experiencing a fire in the home, you may now be focused on salvaging items and restoring the home back to its original condition. If you’re worried you’ll have to throw away some of your clothes and other valuable, important items, consider other cleaning alternatives, such as dry cleaning for clothes that currently smell like smoke.

1/31/2018 (Permalink)

Beyond what can be achieved by a fire truck and fire hose. A certified fire restraint expert has the right training and equipment to cleanup a fire damaged building. When you face a fire in the home or business, do not simply write everything off. The items in your home can still be salvaged. All you need to do is let the fire damage experts handle the job. How To Prepare for a Future Flood

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Some areas of the country are more prone to flooding than others. It can be devastating to try to recover the costs associated with repairing flood damage. However, homeowners in Aberdeen, MD can reduce the impact by adequately preparing for such disasters.

Pack Everything Essential Beforehand

In the event you need to evacuate, you and your family members need to leave the house immediately. You should have all essential items already packed up so that you do not forget anything. Some crucial items to bring include:

• Prescription medication
• Clothing
• First-aid kit
• Important documents or a flash drive
• Priceless belongings

When you have to evacuate, there may be no time to ensure you gather everything. You should leave your home with peace of mind.

Clean Storm Drains and Gutters

You should already clean your gutters regularly. You especially want to do it right before flooding occurs. Debris in the gutters can cause rainwater to back up. Too much pressure will cause the gutters to break. The water will flood your home’s siding, resulting in more storm damage.

Keep Important Items Away From Potential Flood Areas

If your house has a basement, then you need to waterproof it. You should also keep important items out of this area. The furnace and water heater in particular should be located in areas of the house that are not likely to flood. You should also avoid storing family heirlooms out of the basement. Some items can be restored after a flood, but paper and photographs may be lost forever.

You should develop an evacuation plan for your neighbors, especially if any of them are elderly or sick. They may not have their own transportation. Flooding has been known to occur in Aberdeen, MD so do not get caught off-guard by it. Have a plan, and make sure to review it regularly with your children and whoever else you live with. Contaminated Water Removal Requires Professional Training and Tools

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Flooding poses many problems for Aberdeen, MD homeowners beyond the obvious cleanup requirements. Contaminated water, black water and clean water from an uncontaminated supply line are all part of the puzzle, and each has special requirements in the restoration process. One of the first steps a restoration company takes is determining what type of water is making a mess of your home.

3 Categories of Water

Restoration companies categorize water into three groups:

• Category 1: This is water that is safe to drink. Known as “clean water,” it is provided through a sanitary source, such as drinking fountains and faucets. Water in your toilet tank and water heater is also considered clean.
• Category 2: Water in this category is “gray water.” It contains contaminants that can make you sick if you drink it. Gray water can come from an overflowing clothes washer or dishwasher, or may be water flushed from sink drains. It can even be water from an overflowing toilet that may contain urine, but not feces.
• Category 3: Known as “black water,” this is the worst type of contaminated water. This type of water comes from sewer backup or overflow with feces, along with floodwaters from rivers or streams.

Making Restoration Plans

A sink or tub overflow involves clean water, which has no special handling or disposal requirements. Depending on the severity of the overflow, you may be able to salvage flooring, carpeting, baseboards and furniture, as well as drywall.

Contaminated water, including both gray and black water, should be handled by restoration professionals. It requires special training and tools to assess both the water and water damage and to develop a restoration plan for your Aberdeen, MD home. If you are unsure whether your water supply line has been compromised, be sure to boil your water until supply system operators tell you it’s safe to use. You Wouldn't Want To Drink It

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

While you wouldn't be doing yourself any favors by scooping up your category one floodwater and taking a sip, the fact remains that it's basically clean water. However, it's still a risk for many of the nastier types of water-related problems, such as:

Black mold
• Pest infestation
• Staining
• Bad smells

It also affects the same level of structural damage on Aberdeen, MD buildings as dirty water. Don't let your guard down around a burst supply line or broken pipe just because the water is clean.

Don't Cut Corners

Sure, that water doesn't smell so bad now. You might even be able to remove it without any lingering odor. Even so, it's best to do as much as possible early on: One of the first rules of water damage mitigation is to attempt to get back to a like-new status right after the event. This might just mean removing the water. However, it could involve tasks that you might only think of in context of a remodel, such as removing walls and replacing carpeting.

Trapped Water

The reason for this seemingly excessive amount of work is that all of those structural and finishing materials can become saturated with clean water. Common offenders are:

• Drywall
• Carpeting
• Floorboard pads
• Open-cell and fiberglass insulation
• Ceiling tiles

That trapped water gets old and dirty quickly. In the best-case scenario, your business is left with a persistent and unpleasant aroma. In the worst case, black mold appears. When it comes to the safety of your stakeholders, it is typically best to err on the side of caution.

While a little mopping up might seem to do the trick, a more thorough job might be called for. Even if you start out with clean water, trapped moisture becomes dirty and infested quickly. It's best to get rid of it all, even if that means cutting out some of the affected materials and replacing them.

Then it’s vital to reach out to a local cleanup and restoration company soonest. Here are three important facts about mold that you should know.

1. What is Mold?

The term ‘mold’ describes a group of fungi commonly found in wet materials or on food. You are exposed to mold spores every day, both indoors and outdoors. So, if mold is a natural occurrence, how can it grow in your home? Mold is not an issue unless water damage or extensive humidity are present. The ideal environment for mold is moist, and roof leaks, leaking pipes, damp basements and flooding are all things that can be responsible for mold growth.

2. How Can You Prevent Mold?

The best way to prevent mold from growing is to create an environment that makes it difficult for mold to grow. The three most important aspects are: moisture control, repairs and maintenance. Try to keep the relative humidity level between 30 and 50 percent. A dehumidifier is helpful to keep high humidity at bay. If the outside air is cold and dry, then ensure proper ventilation. Any water issues, such as leaky plumbing, leaking roofs or cracked foundations need to be fixed soonest. Furthermore, prevention is the key. With regular inspections and maintenance, you can prevent issues from occurring in the first place. Have your HVAC system cleaned and plumbing and roof inspected regularly.

3. How Does the Remediation Process Work?

After you noticed mold in your residence, the experts are responsible for ridding your home of the mold. The steps are:

Mold containment
Mold removal, disinfection and cleaning of belongings
Possibly tear out affected materials
HEPA vacuuming
Mold prevention

The best things you can do is to prevent mold growth by taking steps against high humidity, fixing water damage and ensuring well-maintained systems. However, if things do go wrong, a cleanup company can successfully restore your home.

Salvaging Smoke-Damaged Items After a Home Fire

Salvaging Smoke-Damaged Items After a Home Fire

In the aftermath of a fire, you may hear people say things like “They’ve lost everything,” or “Their home is a total loss,” but it may not always be the case. A professional restoration company can assess fire damage and suggest options for dry cleaning, content cleaning and content storage that can help you reclaim your Aberdeen, Maryland house and furnishings.

Cleaning Methods for Various Materials

Fire damage includes damage from smoke and soot, as well as water from firefighting efforts. Professional cleaners determine whether items are salvageable using one of several cleaning methods, which range from foam for cleaning upholstery to immersion in a “bath” of cleaning solution. Two additional cleaning methods important to restoration are dry cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning.

Dry Cleaning

If clothing is machine washable, restoration may include pre-treatment, followed by a cycle or two in the washing machine. For delicate materials, dry cleaning can help restore clothing to pre-fire condition. Dry cleaning may also be appropriate to salvage bedding, draperies and other materials.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Ultrasonic technology may be able to clean a variety of non-porous items, including ceramic figurines, glass chandeliers, plastics, vinyl and objects made of precious metals such as brass, silver and gold. Ultrasonic equipment uses this technology to produce sound waves. These waves travel through a cleaning solution to “micro-scrub” an item’s entire surface, including areas not accessible by hand or with tools.

Move Contents to Storage

For homes that need heavy cleaning and restoration, it’s often smart to pack household items and move them to content storage beforehand. Removing items benefits you by eliminating obstacles to a faster repair of the house. It also helps protect contents from further fire damage and possible harm during the restoration process.

If your Aberdeen, Maryland home is involved in a fire, remember that all is not lost. Dry cleaning can restore clothes, while content cleaning using ultrasonic technology can salvage household items. Visit http://www.SERVPROeastharfordcounty.com for more information on fire damage.

Flood Cuts: Are They Really Necessary?

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Flood Cuts: Are They Really Necessary?

You may have experienced flooding in your basement in Aberdeen, Maryland and, while talking to a restoration professional, heard the term “flood cut.” It’s easy for them to get wrapped up in the vernacular of the business, but it’s a term you may not have heard before. The flood cut process is outlined below, along with reasons why it’s sometimes necessary.

Tearing Out Drywall

Basically, a flood cut is an industry-specific term for when restoration professionals will tear out drywall anywhere between 12 to 18 inches above the flood line. For example, if your basement has been flooded with two feet of water, the cut will begin at three feet above the floor. This allows the restoration workers to assess water damage behind the wall, which is often overlooked by many property managers and can cause mold or severe odor when left unchecked.

When Are Flood Cuts Unnecessary?

Even if your basement has flooded with two or more feet of water, a flood cut is not always necessary. The purpose of a flood cut is to treat water damage behind drywall, but if the water in question is category one or white water, the cut will not be necessary. This is because flooding from white water is mostly harmless as far as pathogens and bacteria go. This kind of water damage can be treated via a relatively non-invasive method that involves pumping water out of the wall void via injection.

When Are Flood Cuts Necessary?

There is an exception to the white water rule, however, when it comes to insulation. If the insulation behind the drywall has been damaged by flooding, a flood cut will still be necessary with white water. Insulation cannot be dried properly and still function the way it’s intended. With categories two and three, or grey and black water, respectively, a flood cut will definitely be necessary to prevent contamination due to the bacteria those types of water can carry.

The Need for Commercial Fire Damage Experts

9/26/2017 (Permalink)

The Need for Commercial Fire Damage Experts

The immediate reaction to fire is to call the firefighters to the scene. If you have a fire sprinkler system or fire suppression device, it should be used to contain the fire before the firefighters arrive. The fire truck and fire hose are immediately used by the firefighters to put out of the fire. Once the fire is out, the process of fire restoration begins.

You should have commercial fire damage experts on standby to deal with the fire damage, smoke damage and soot damage. After a fire, many homeowners assume that everything is lost. They do not see fire restoration damage efforts as beneficial. However, there are still many home items that can be saved, even those that are affected by soot damage. The work is not over when the fire trucks, fire hose and firefighters leave the scene.

When it comes to dealing with soot damage and smoke damage, timing is everything. Soot damage causes heavy discoloration on appliances and walls. Commercial fire damage experts have the right tools to deal with the soot damage. They use special deodorization agents to get rid of the discoloration. In most cases, you do not need to replace everything after a fire damage. A proper cleanup can make the items and walls look as good as new.

When they arrive on the scene, commercial fire damage experts begin by assessing the fire. They also seek to determine the cause of the fire. Electrical fires are very common in homes. Electrical fires are mainly caused by faulty electrical outlets and the use of old or outdated appliances. Electrical fires spread easily to other rooms. The fires can also spread once they catch rugs and curtains. The commercial fire damage will give an assessment and advice on the best way to avoid electrical fires.

Smoke damage and soot damage assessment are also part of the fire restoration process. Smoke can be categorized into protein smoke, wet smoke or dry smoke. Wet smoke results from low heat. Dry smoke is from high temperature and fast burning fire. Protein smoke damage has a pungent odor. A proper assessment of the soot and smoke damage is crucial in the process of fire restoration.

Most fires in the home also happen in utility rooms. Utility room fires account for more than 15, 000 of the fires reported annually. Utility room fires are hard to put out because in most cases the rooms are stuffy. Another cause of utility room fires is that most people store flammable items in these rooms. For instance, a hot dryer left in a laundry room can easily cause a fire when it comes into contact with lint. To reduce the occurrence of utility room fires, dryers should be stored safely. Electronics should also be maintained and old appliances replaced.

Professional Storm Damage Restoration

Professional Storm Damage Restoration

This year has been a doozy when it comes to hurricane, floods, and other natural disasters requiring home restoration and storm remediation. Many people probably sighed when they hear the words Storm remediation.

A list of a homeowner's nightmares would probably look a lot like this:

Removing standing ground water or flood water (especially resulting from a roof leak and requiring a floor pump)
Wind damage to the siding and paint
Dealing with frozen pipes or an ice dam (really any kind of ice damage...)
Water restoration, and other utility problems

Whether you're dealing with frozen pipes, ground water, or flood water, we'll explain why you should enlist the help of a storm restoration professional.

Your home is one of the most important investments you'll ever make; whether your home has undergone hail damage or ice damage, you deserve the peace of mind that an only experienced storm remediation expert can provide.

Hurricane Damage: A Little Bit of Everything

Hurricane damage means not only flooding, but wind damage. This can destroy even solidly-built homes caught in the direct flood water--especially in cases of river flooding. Hurricanes such as Irma and Harvey present major problems in many areas of home remediation.

Even "lesser" hurricane damage like

Wind damage can affect your entire home, but it is notable for causing extensive roof damage, usually requiring professional roof repair. Let's learn more about storm remediation...

After the Storm

In the wake of a storm, you'll likely be worried about your home restoration and water restoration. With the help of a flood pump and other tools, an expert can fix whatever problem your home or office has undergone--from ice damming all the way to expert roof repair.

A flood pump is one of the storm remediation expert's most potent tools in the fight against flooding and storm damage. Remove all standing ground water is an important step in fighting mold, thereby protecting your home's livability.

Some of the most common home restoration issues occurring as a result of flooding include:

Roof leak, serious enough to require roof repair
Pools of Collected Flood Water
Damaged Siding and Roofing (most often associated with hurricane damage)

Know your home and understand your storm damage risks. Many older homes sustain roof damage or a roof leak. This quickly adds up to a ground water problem.

Is your home in danger of river flooding? River flooding issues can turn into ice damming problems (if you've never dealt with an ice dam, consider yourself lucky). Ice damming is often a symptom of frozen pipes, and ice damage can affect your home's plumbing.

If ice damming isn't your problem, wind damage might pose a problem for home remediation. Also common is hail damage; it's hard to fix hail damage, due to the sheer amount of hail damage that usually occurs from a single, serious storm system (notably, roof damage or a roof leak).

Can't I Fix Storm Damage By Myself?

Why should I hire someone for storm restoration?

Leave water restoration, frozen pipes, and ice dam issues to professionals who have the know-how to repair river flooding and ice damage without causing further damage to your home. Tips on Mold Control

Mold in homes is a common problem facing the society in the past years. Though the problem might have cooled down, mold in homes are still an important issue. Nonetheless, what are molds? They are a part of the natural environment and can be found anywhere, whether indoors or outdoors. Normally, mold in homes are not a problem unless mold growth behind wall occurs indoors.

The effective method in controlling mold damage especially black mold is to control moisture content or seeking restoration company services. There are two important things to note about mold removal; first, you have to do the right thing the first time and whenever you face mold in homes, eliminate them immediately. Ensuring you follow the right steps in mold removal will take care of the later problems. Below are steps that can be adopted in mitigation process of black molds.

#1 Step one: Learn about moisture control

Since the only efficient method in mold preventing mold growth behind wall is through moisture control, it is important to learn about moisture and mildew control. Fungus can be an invisible intruder that is capable of growing in the corners of your house. Additionally, you also experience mold growth behind wall without your knowledge. Such behavior requires a quick inquisitive thinking in dealing with them.

The first step is to understand what is behind its growth. Second, become an expert in dealing with moisture control and the mitigation process. Something to note is that, when water leaks or spills occur in your home it is likely commercial mold damage will occur and therefore mold removal will be required.

#2 Step two: mold assessment

It is critical to assess the possibilities of commercial mold damage and begin the cleanup process. Checking every nook and cranny where mold growth can hide is necessary. In addition, the added knowledge of what these fungus feed on is also necessary. Black mold feeds on cellulose as well as moisture and is commonly found on dry rot and framing materials.

#3 Step three: mold cleanup

It is always necessary to eliminate fungus in homes as quickly as possible. Deodorization depends on a number of factors. One consideration is the size of mold damage, for instance if the area of infestation is less than 10 square feet, in most cases it is possible to handle the mold removal process by yourself before seeking services of a restoration company. However, you might need some tips and techniques before undertaking the task. Below are several tips in remediation of commercial mold damage and mildews:

• First step in remediation is to fix plumbing leaks and any other water leaks sources as soon as possible. Additionally, a dry rot is also an important procedure in prevention of commercial mold damage.
• Scrub hard surfaces infested with fungus with detergent and soap thoroughly, using a dry rot and deodorization is equally necessary to remove any smelly odor.
• Throw away absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles and carpets. Mold growth and mildews are likely to fill the empty spaces and crevices creating a smelly odor and therefore making them almost impossible to remove. However, deodorization can also be used.
• It is also important not to paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Instead, clean up the mold damage and dry rot the surfaces before painting. Paint applied on black mold surfaces is likely to peel off or wear out quickly.
• Seek the help of a restoration company. Services of a restoration company are necessary in perfect attainment of the mitigation process.

#4 Step four: determine if the cleanup has been successful

Just because mold growth and mildew is gone and there are no signs of dirt or dust does not mean you are done. Making a judgment call requires some options and guidelines. Some of these guidelines include:
• Verify if the moisture problem has been fixed by revisiting after remediation, if it has worked you shouldn’t find any signs of damage.
• Remediation process might have worked if there are no signs of visible mold growth or smelly odor
• Homeowners should be capable of re-occupying their homes if there are no physical or aggravated health complains. Additionally, if there is no smelly odor of mold growth behind wall it might be safe.

Mold damage mitigation is achieved using the above process more so on the moisture control process. Additionally, deodorization can also slow down mold growth behind wall.

What to Do After a Fire

What to Do After a Fire

A fire in a home or a fire in a business can be disorienting and shocking. They often occur unexpectedly and leave families and business owners without a plan to move forward. There are certain steps that must be taken to ensure the smooth transition into a life after fire damage to a property.

After commercial fire damage, a fire in a home, or a fire in a business, the individual's insurance company should be called immediately. An insurance company may pay fully for a restoration company's services in fire damage restoration. This will give any individual an ally in the process of managing smoke damage, soot damage, or commercial fire damage. Fire cleanup is a complicated process that can involve specialized equipment and multiple parties. Simplifying the process through a restoration company gives property owners peace of mind while they deal with the emotional loss of their home or business.

After contacting the insurance company and calling a restoration company, the property must be evaluated by a professional. Firefighting often involves extensive water damage and cutting holes into walls. The building itself may be structurally damaged and require boarding up. A professional who can evaluated the extent of fire damage to doors, windows, walls, and roofs can better board up the property to prevent further damage than an individual property owner. This service is often provided by the restoration company.

Once a property has been boarded up and secured, important documents like driver's licenses, medical records, birth and death certificates, bankbooks, and passports should be replaced at the appropriate authorities. It is easier to do this sooner rather than later, and restoration companies will generally help to guide individuals in this process. Even burnt and destroyed money can be replaced by the Federal Reserve Bank if necessary.

The fire cleanup team will also evaluate the rest of the property and give the property owner an estimate on the costs of repair or replacement of personal property. It usually also works to store personal items that have not undergone fire damage while the rest of the fire damage restoration is occurring. Fire cleanup is a lengthy process, and commercial fire damage can be particularly difficult to restore. It is helpful that a fir cleanup team can allow for some stability by holding onto personal belongings throughout the process.

Fire damage after a fire in a home or a fire in a business is not limited only to burning. Soot damage and smoke damage also quickly settle into the contents of a property and leave an irritating smoke smell. This smoke smell must be eradicated by special techniques that a specialized technician will decide on. Certain smoke smells can be gotten rid of with ventilation, but often thermal fogging or ozone treatments are necessary for extensive smoke damage and soot damage, which can leave extremely stubborn smoke smells.

Fire damage restoration of fabrics and textiles by a fabric and textile technician will also usually be necessary, especially if a property is carpeted. Soot damage settles into carpet within minutes of a fire and usually requires an industrial vacuum and steam injection to clean. The oily soot, coupled with smoke damage, can cause permanent commercial fire damage to large areas of carpet. A property owner may choose to replace it altogether rather than pursuing fire damage restoration.

A fire in a home or a fire in a business can be daunting to deal with. Resources exist to help families who are recovering from a disaster, like the American Red Cross, FEMA, Salvation Army, and religious organizations. At times when recovery may seem like a difficult process, these resources can help with the transition while the restoration team works on the property itself. A boarded up property can be unsightly, but with proper fire cleanup, it should reverse itself soon enough with the proper guidance of the right licensed professionals. The Effects of Long-term Water Damage

6/30/2017 (Permalink)

The Effects of Long-term Water Damage

Whether the cause is a broken pipe, a sewer backup, flood damage or another source of water, the result is often damage to home and property. Many of these issues occur in unseen areas, and homeowners are unaware it is happening. Without immediate restoration efforts, water cleanup and drying, the damage goes from bad to worse and eventually becomes a drastic situation that could lead to long-term problems.

Mold Damage

Within just a day or two of flood damage or any type of water damage, mold begins growing. These microscopic fungi thrive wherever moisture exists, so all that water in home that seeped into cracks and crevices and under carpet creates a mold colony breeding ground. As it grows, mold destroys what it touches and spreads to other areas. Once mold starts growing, it does not stop until the water in business is removed. Getting rid of the fungus, especially after it has been growing for a while, is typically time consuming, costly and inconvenient without proper mold mitigation help. When homeowners attempt do-it-yourself methods for drying and water cleanup, they often lack the skills needed to find all mold locations and breeding grounds, which means they may not solve the problem. Choosing a mitigation and restoration expert can effectively resolve mold issue caused by water damage.

Rotting Wood Damage

Water damage affecting wood can lead to rot, which leads to structural problems. Rotting wood is not caused by the water in business or home but by fungi breeding in moist conditions. Several types of fungi affect wood, and they can multiply rapidly. If the wood dries, the fungi may appear to disappear, but it is likely only dormant. When it becomes moist again, the fungi revives to begin destroying the wood. Any fungi-infected wood can spread to good wood on contact. Infection can also spread through wood-to-soil contact and by airborne fungi spores. Decomposition results in white rot or brown rot. White rotted wood becomes a paler color but may appear to still be intact. However, it has less shock resistance, is weaker and breaks easily. Brown rotted wood gets darker, shrinks and cracks into cube or oblong shaped pieces that easily crumble into a powder. Rotting wood is especially problematic if the wood is part of a home's support structure since the weight of the house will become too great for the wood to handle. Homeowners with this issue could face thousands in repair and construction costs outside of what's spent on drying and water cleanup. This money can be saved by dealing with the water in home problem as soon as it happens.

Concrete Damage

Concrete is durable but not indestructible, which is evident with flood damage and other water in business. Moisture that seeps into cracks and crevices and underneath concrete because of water damage can lead to multiple problems. They include erosion of the ground near the concrete and corrosion of steel reinforcements inside the concrete. This can weaken a foundation, making a house structurally unsound. Just above the concrete slab many homes rest upon is flooring, such as carpet, wood and tile. Moisture coming up from the concrete causes floors to peel, warp and buckle and sometimes lose its adhesion. Like other water in home damage, the issue needs mitigation and restoration work right away to prevent long-term problems.

Resolving Water Damage Problems

Perhaps there was only a small amount of water that leaked in one room, or it was flood damage that impacted the entire house. Either way, any amount of water in home or water in business is potentially damaging. The solution is not merely water cleanup or drying wet areas. A professional restoration and mitigation expert knows how to spot damage, even when it is unseen. With professional help, business owners and homeowners can trust that the source of the problem is dealt with so that damage is prevented or minimized.

The Benefits of Calling Professional Mold Removal Companies

6/30/2017 (Permalink)

The Benefits of Calling Professional Mold Removal Companies

Mold removal, remediation, and mitigation handled by a professional mold removal company is required anytime anyone finds mold in the home, commercial mold damage, or suspects there is mold present but invisible. At no time is it safe to handle the mold removal process without professional help, and the reasons for this are numerous. Mold removal is an intricate process that requires specific equipment and knowledge. Even the smallest amount of mold, mildew, or fungus is dangerous, but many assume it’s not that big a problem if it’s not everywhere. This is the first mistake home and business owners make, and that’s why it’s time to call for professional remediation and mitigation before the problem becomes bigger and more expensive.

Professional Equipment

The most prominent reason to call a professional mold remediation and mitigation company is for the use of their professional equipment to handle mold and mildew that might be present. This equipment is designed to handle mold damage that’s not easily seen or reached by anyone else, and that’s what makes it most effective. This equipment handles mold damage quickly and with ease, greatly reducing the chances this fungus will grow back and cause future damage.

Professional equipment is designed to track down all mold, mildew, and fungus, and it’s designed to kill it and remove it for good. Remediation and mitigation companies also take the time to teach home and business owners how to prevent and handle future mold in the home or commercial mold damage. This type of education makes mold less likely to occur, and it makes life a little easier.

The Signs of Mold Damage

One thing many people fail to realize is there are many signs mold might be a problem. Mold in the home, as well as commercial mold damage, can occur without anyone ever noticing if it’s caused by a pipe leaking inside a wall. The first sign of mold might be the presence of mildew or fungus in other rooms. This is not necessarily mold, but it’s a negative sign. If it can grow in the home or office, so can mold. It means mold in the home or commercial mold damage is possible because conditions are favorable.

The home or office might be too humid, too warm, and too moist. There might be a leak somewhere, a window or door that’s not properly sealed, or another moisture issue in the home. Humidity below 40% is unwelcoming, and it doesn’t allow mold to grow.

Another common sign of mold many people miss is the smelly odor it emits. This smelly odor is moist and unpleasant, and it’s one people might assume deodorization can handle. While deodorization is a typical way to handle the smelly odor, it’s not getting rid of it. Deodorization makes the smelly odor less noticeable for a time, but it does nothing to get rid of it. Deodorization is also a method used by professionals to help with the smell once they handle mold, but it can’t kill it or make it go away. It’s a temporary fix until professional equipment is brought in to handle the situation.

Mold damage requires professional remediation and mitigation. The benefits of calling the pros far outweigh the negative, which is often the cost for many home and business owners. Most people want to try and fix mold issues on their own, but it’s dangerous. Some mold is hazardous, and most people don’t know the difference. This is when it’s mandatory pros come in to do the dirty work. The cost upfront is a lot less than it will be if the problem is handled by a person without the knowledge and grows worse. Call now to avoid paying more later, or even to avoid seeing further damage occur in a home or office.

5/8/2017 (Permalink)

Havre De Grace Flooding Relies on SERVPRO for Cleanup and Water Removal

SERVPRO's Array of Measuring Devices Ensures a Dry Home Post Flooding

Dishwashers are a welcome addition to many households. After all, who does not love being able to simply rinse the dishes, set the cycle, and let the machine do the work? It is very convenient. However, like any other appliance, a dishwasher might malfunction, and a dishwasher breakdown often equals a flood of water in your kitchen.

Flood damage to your Havre de Grace home can be a serious cause for concern. A dishwasher might cause a surprisingly large flood in your kitchen, so naturally, you want to get that cleaned up as quickly as possible to mitigate any further damage. That is why we recommend you put in a call to SERVPRO at once -We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.
An essential element of our job is assessing the damage to your home. A thorough assessment lets our experts know how much moisture is present, which is vital information that we need to decide upon the best course of action.
A visual inspection is an important first start, but of course, that is only one part of the process. Our teams come prepared with a range of powerful equipment to help us assess the flood damage to your home:
A moisture sensor to help us ascertain how deeply water has penetrated into soft materials. The sensor displays a blinking light and makes an audible beep when moisture is present, and this allows us to measure the extent of the damage. We have other models that work silently.
A moisture meter to help us measure how much moisture is in any structure. Meters are useful for testing the damp content of every part surrounding your dishwasher including not only the floor but also walls, wall insulation, cabinets, and rugs or carpets. Do not worry if you have a wooden floor. Our SERVPRO experts also come equipped with penetrating moisture meters that can be used to take a reading under wood flooring or even inside the wall. Our technicians calibrate the instrument to suit the material that we are testing.
Thermo-hygrometers. Thermo-hygrometers measure the temperature and the relative humidity in your kitchen. Our technicians use these readings to determine the extent of the water damage. This is usually used after the water has been removed, a verification that a standard RH has been attained.
A complete evaluation of the situation assists us in drawing up an effective individual drying plan for your kitchen. We monitor moisture and humidity throughout the drying process so you can rest assured your kitchen is at optimum dryness and humidity before we call the job done. We can also provide documentation to your insurance company.
If your dishwasher breaks, do not delay. Call SERVPRO of Harford County at (410) 679-6260 today for an assessment of the damage and a swift restoration service.

How Safe Is A Home With Small Amounts Of Unrepaired Fire Damage In Edgewood?

4/28/2017 (Permalink)

There are situations where even small amounts of fire damage can pose ongoing problems to residents in the home.

Unrepaired Fire Damage

When a home is damaged on the interior, neighbors and building code inspectors may never know about the problem. However, this lack of knowledge cannot provide protection from damage caused by fire or other types of damage-causing elements, such as water or mold. There are situations where even small amounts of fire damage can pose ongoing problems to residents in the home.

Edgewood homes that have even insignificant fire damage should have the area inspected by a professional. A charred wall may seem to be okay and a simple covering, such as a large painting or mirror, might be thought of as being enough. The damage from a fire can extend into the wall, where wiring runs. This wiring can be damaged, even if that damage is not apparent immediately. Subsequent fire from wiring that becomes too hot is a very real danger in this type of situation. Also, insulation in exterior walls can suffer from fire damage and allow problems to develop in the vicinity.

One thing to remember about fire damage is that in addition to the fire itself, the heat generated often causes extensive and costly damage to nearby structures. If an area is damaged by flames near a doorway, this can affect how the door closes. Locked exterior doors might not be as secure when locked because many locks have plastic parts that quickly melt when exposed to high temperatures. Having a false sense of security can result in dangerous consequences or costly thefts that might not be covered by insurance.

Fire damage can also create charred areas that might not be visible because they are located higher than the area that is exposed. These areas can allow rain and snow to enter, albeit slowly. When moisture can enter into your exterior walls, many other types of damage can develop. These are also very costly to repair and remediate.

Because of these reasons, even small amounts of fire damage should be inspected and repaired as soon as possible. SERVPRO of Harford County can help you with this and many other types of damage that can affect the safety of your home. We can elaborate more about how our services can benefit you. We are always available to take your call at (410) 679-6260.

Drying Lino Floors When Dishwasher Causes Flood Damage In Havre de Grace

4/12/2017 (Permalink)

If your dishwasher breaks down and causes flood damage to your home, you need to get things dried out as quickly as possible.

Drying Flood Damaged Flooring

Dishwashers are great when they are working with no problems. Any busy person can appreciate being able to put dirty dishes in the washer and forget about them until later. Unfortunately, a dishwasher can also break and when it does water in the kitchen becomes a problem.

If your dishwasher breaks down and causes flood damage to your Havre de Grace home, you need to get things dried out as quickly as possible. Any delay means a greater risk of damage to your house and more chance for mold or mildew to grow. That is why we recommend calling SERVPRO as soon as you find the water leak in your kitchen.

When a dishwasher leaks, the principal concern is often getting the floor and floor covering dried out. Many kitchens have lino floor coverings. Although lino does not absorb water like carpet does, fast drying is still a must to prevent further damage or mold growth. There is a particular risk of water becoming trapped under any loose sections of lino floor. Our IICRC-certified technicians start by using truck mounted and free standing pumps to draw out any standing water. Next, we remove lino so we can thoroughly dry both the lino and the floor underneath.

Our team uses a combination of dehumidifiers and air movers to dry your kitchen floor and lino. Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air to decrease humidity and therefore reduce drying times. We carefully calculate how many dehumidifiers to use and where to position them based on the cubic feet of area to be dried and the extent of the water damage.

We also train our technicians to use air movers and dehumidifiers together to dry out your kitchen floor. Air movers are not like the fans you pick up at your local hardware store. Rather they are designed to blow air across wet surfaces and replace it with drier air. While the dehumidifiers produce more dry, warm air, air movers circulate that air across wet materials.

SERVPRO understands that getting the right balance of air movers to dehumidifiers is key to successful drying. Too many air movers can result in secondary water damage, but too few air movers slow down the drying process. That is why our team carefully calculates the exact number and position of air movers and dehumidifiers for your specific situation. When drying is complete, we replace your lino - “Like it never even happened.”

Call SERVPRO of Harford County at (410) 679-6260 for help cleaning up after a broken dishwasher.

Information For Safe Remediation Of Mold Damage In Your Havre De Grace Area Home

3/11/2017 (Permalink)

Havre De Grace Mold Remediation is Best Left to SERVPRO

SERVPRO Suggests to Call Us for Mold Cleanup in Your Home

Visiting the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) website presents you with a variety of measures to take when dealing with mold growth in your home. If you read far enough into it, the documentation tells you that there is no such thing as an acceptable type or amount of mold growth and that any mold that you find requires the attention of professionally trained technicians, like those available from SERVPRO.
If you insist on tackling the mold damage situation in your Havre De Grace home on your own, it is vital for you to read every bit of information provided by the CDC, EPA, and IICRC certification websites. Do not leave anything to chance, or you may end up causing far more harm to your property. SERVPRO strongly recommends that you hire a professional, certified mold remediation company to tackle an attack by these fungi.
The information available through the CDC also states that if the affected area you face exceeds 10 square feet, that you should contact a professional remediation company to handle the situation. Keep that in mind before you proceed.
The staff at SERVPRO can provide you with all of the services you need to deal with your mold remediation properly. There is no reason for you to attempt to do these things on your own, we already have IICRC certified technicians available to assist you.

Protect Yourself – Make sure that you use personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and goggles to protect yourself and anyone else present during the remediation process. Safety is #1.

Physically Remove Contaminated Materials – Anything that has the slightest amount of exposure within the contaminated area requires disposal. Just remember to take pictures for insurance purposes. Can you safely discard these contaminated items?

Properly Ventilate The Area – Open every door and window possible while working and leave as many as possible open once you leave for the day. Keep security in mind as well, but remember you only have 24 to 48-hours before the growth process begins. SERVPRO using containment protocols and limiting air circulation to reduce the chance of mold spore migration.

Purposefully Circulate The Air – After you make sure that zero electrical hazards exist, you can use fans and dehumidifiers to assist with removing moisture from the affected area. It is important to dry every area as soon as possible to prevent additional growth.

Products For Cleaning – Avoid mixing cleaning products like bleach and ammonia. When mixed, they create toxic vapors that cause health issues.

Painstakingly Scrub All Surfaces – Clean any contaminated surfaces found with the proper detergent mixture and dry the area immediately. Make sure to remove mold growth effectively before performing repairs. Once again, this information is for the DIY'er. We offer these suggestions to keep you safe, but please call us and play it safe.

Furniture and Other Household Items Should be Dried and Cleaned After Flood Damage in Joppa

3/3/2017 (Permalink)

Flood in Joppa? Call SERVPRO to Save the Day!

Damage From Flooding Ruins Belongings and Furnishings

Floods affect every aspect of a home. It is more than the water you see flowing through your home that should cause you concern. Keeping windows and doors closed can keep looters out, but at the same time, it also holds moisture in.

The amount of time spent submerged affects the amount of flood damage in Joppa. Damage does not stay contained but can spread within a home rapidly. Heat from the interior of your home can cause water to evaporate. This humidity must go somewhere, and it will typically end up in the drier areas of your home, as these locations can absorb moisture more readily. As this water evaporates, it can hold microbes.

When moisture condenses on surfaces within your home, it can also deposit any microorganisms, mold spores, chemicals, and other contaminants. When furniture is affected in such a way, mold can begin growing. This microbe can easily penetrate upholstery, just like it penetrates into semi-porous surfaces like wood and drywall. Not only should furniture be placed on blocks that will keep your floor from being stained, but upholstery also requires special care as part of any flood damage cleanup.

At the same time that upholstery is being cleaned of contaminants, metal fixtures from braces to foot rest extenders need to be cleaned of water to ensure they do not rust. A light coating of oil can also be applied to increase protection. The undersides of furniture often have a protective dust cover that can retain moisture, so this is often unfastened, allowing it to dry more quickly. This allows for increased air contact when air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers are used.

Plants need to be placed outside before ozone-producing machines can be implemented. Potted plants can be flooded with clean water after being placed outside, flushing any contaminants out of the soil and allowing them to drain away. Just as food needs to be thrown away that has been contaminated by flood water, potted plants that produce edible berries or other fruits should be considered a possible hazard. Disposing of potted plants that produce fruit may be in your best interest.

SERVPRO of Harford County can do more than repair the structural problems that arise with flood damage – they can also clean the contents of your home. Call us as soon as you have a flood emergency at (410) 679-6260. We are a locally owned business and can arrive promptly.

Office Disasters in Aberdeen from Water Damage

Keep Your Office Humming without Water Damage to Your Equipment

Trust SERVPRO to Keep Your Office Humming

Although offices usually have fewer sources of potential water damage than other businesses, they are far from immune to it. Office buildings contain expensive equipment, furniture, and appliances that are highly susceptible to damage from high volumes of water, and in the event of a disaster, the results can be costly. Fast responses are critical so that SERVPRO can arrive and begin mitigation work to prevent expenses from piling up. Otherwise, some of these scenarios could crop up in your office building.
Structural Collapse
Ceiling collapses are some of the most costly effects of water damage in Aberdeen office buildings. When large volumes of water soak into a second floor, the weight may become unbearable or materials may be sufficiently weakened to cause a full collapse. In addition to costs related to restoration of the caved-in area, these events often occur far away from walls and supports. In an office environment, this is typically where computers, equipment, and other workspaces are located. By getting SERVPRO inspectors out to the property at the first sign of damage, you help to increase our inspectors' efficacy in identifying structural weak points before a collapse is allowed to happen.
Electronics Damage
In addition to computers, most offices now contain other expensive electronics such as televisions, copy machines, kitchen appliances, and more. With high volumes of water, these can be severely and permanently damaged, typically many thousands of dollars to replace. Documenting inventory is critical here for insurance purposes, our SERVPRO team can help.
Basement Damage
Many offices use basements for storage or server hosting purposes. In the event of a flood, be it human-made or natural in origin, these basements often take the worst of the damage. Any problems encountered elsewhere in the building are usually worsened underground, and it may be difficult to salvage expensive equipment lost down there.
SERVPRO of Harford County has the tools, technique, and technicians to handle even the most serious water damage cases in the local area. Call us anytime at (410) 679-6260 for our restoration services.

Why Fire Damage In Your Edgewood Home Might Require A Long Term Solution

1/26/2017 (Permalink)

After a fire, the real challenge is soot and smoke, rather than heat-based damage as you might expect.

Fire Damage In Your Home

When fire strikes, you need a fast and powerful response. SERVPRO can provide that response because we have access to cutting edge restoration tools and equipment. We also adhere to the highest industry standards when it comes to deodorization, structural repairs, cleaning, and air scrubbing.

Our technicians are here to offer you a comprehensive solution so that you do not have to worry about the future of your home. Hand it over to our team, and they will use advanced techniques to wipe away the damage caused by flames, soot, and smoke. If the fire damage in your Edgewood home is severe, they will put together a long-term restoration plan. Keep reading to find out when and why fire damage might require a prolonged schedule of deodorizing and freshening.

Tackling The Source
At SERVPRO, the aim is to leave your property in the best condition possible. After a fire, the real challenge is soot and smoke, rather than heat-based damage as you might expect. Furniture, curtains, and wallpaper can be replaced, but structural elements like the subflooring and drywall need to be thoroughly cleansed of foul odors.

This can be done in a number of ways. In larger spaces, the technicians can set up ozone generators, air scrubbers, and deodorizing machines. They interact directly with odor particles and render them inert. However, reaching smaller spaces can be trickier. Behind cabinets, inside drywall, under floorboards, and in crawlspaces are all places that are hard to reach.

Cleaning Hard To Reach Areas
One of the ways in which our experts can refresh the stale air in these hard to reach places is with the use of high-powered fans and air movers. They are positioned as close to the area as possible (inside if they fit) and the stream of fresh, clean air flushes out lingering odors. We may ask you to leave these fans running overnight so that progress is fast and efficient.

The problem with fire damage is that produces very stubborn odors. We can deodorize and clean the air thoroughly, but there is a small chance that smoky smells will return if conditions get humid. High temperatures and humid air intensify odors, so the summer months (particularly the first one after the fire) may stimulate a low-level reappearance.

Fortunately, if this does happen, all you need to do is get in touch with the SERVPRO team, and they will arrive on site to eliminate the last of the odors. It really is that simple. As SERVPRO of Harford County is a local service, we are ideally placed to carry out repairs in the Edgewood region. Call us 24/7 on (410) 679-6260.

Controlling Future Mold Growth In Riverside

1/17/2017 (Permalink)

Mold grows most easily in dark, warm areas, such as in basements or behind walls.

Mold Growth

Mold damage may seem like a slow and minimally threatening factor in your home, but in reality, it is one of the most costly and preventable types of damage that exists. Unlike fires and floods, preventative measures can be taken to prevent mold growth in its entirety. Half of the battle is knowing where and how mold tends to grow and watching over vulnerable areas like a hawk. The other half involves keeping out its life essentials, namely a source of water.

Where To Watch For Mold
Mold grows most easily in dark, warm areas, such as in basements or behind walls. Importantly, Riverside mold damage always occurs on an organic surface such as fabric, carpet, or wood. This is because mold uses the surface it grows on as a food source, feeding on its nutrients and slowly wearing away at it. This is why prolonged mold exposure can cause a material to rot away: the mold is literally eating away at it. Check up on areas that are out of your normal sight lines and have an organic surface, especially in bathrooms, as these will be your primary growth spots for future mold damage.

What It Needs To Grow
Mold needs three things to grow: heat, food, and water. Unfortunately, the first two aren't controllable by you, as they are necessary for your own comfort and home. Water, however, can be controlled and kept from an area. Mold is adaptable and can grow with nearly any source of water, whether it is flowing or standing water on a surface, dampened material, or even just a high degree of humidity in the environment. All of these can be controlled, so be sure to keep humidity as low as possible and water away from parts of your home where it should not be.

SERVPRO of Harford County is fully certified and equipped to handle mold damage of all shapes, sizes, and species. Contact us as soon as you spot damage at (410) 679-6260.

Why Clean Air Ducts Prevent Commercial Fire Damage in Aberdeen Restaurants

12/14/2016 (Permalink)

Restaurant kitchen fires can escalate quickly. Call SERVPRO to discuss prevention and to assess any damage!

SERVPRO Technicians Can Identify Possible Causes of Future Fires for Business Owners

For obvious reasons, restaurants are a common source of commercial fires. The combination of intense heat, lots of activity, and industrial powered equipment can be a veritable tinderbox if not handled correctly.

For example, the most common cause of restaurant fires is poorly maintained air duct and extraction systems. In other words, commercial fire damage in Aberdeen eateries is not usually linked to pan fires or unsafe behaviors. The culprit is a build-up of grease.

As a local provider of fire damage repairs, SERVPRO is used to dealing with this kind of problem. Our technicians do more than just restore. They help business owners to avoid further fires, by identifying the source.

Why Duct Maintenance Is Essential

In a commercial kitchen, grease and fat accumulate at a rapid rate. Air duct and extraction fans are actually designed to remove this grime from the air. Yet, many kitchens forget to clean them. The grease starts to coat the surface of the ducts.

If even a small fire occurs, there is a risk of the material catching alight and causing extensive damage. Walls may be stained and blackened with soot. In cases of serious fire, they will be burned and could need replacing.

How to Recover From a Duct Fire

All restaurants and commercial kitchens need to employ a professional service to clean and maintain their duct systems. This is the only way to ensure that a build-up of grease doesn’t significantly raise the risk of fire. However, if your business does fall victim to fire damage, it doesn’t have to be the end of your story.

SERVPRO has spent many years bringing commercial sites back from the brink of destruction. We have access to state of the art cleaning tools, which can remove stubborn soot and smoke stains. We use sophisticated deodorizing devices to disinfect the air and eliminate foul odors. And, we can help you replace damaged structural materials like drywall and plasterboard, in the event of serious damage.

If your business needs advice on fire prevention, you can get in touch with our experts. SERVPRO of Harford County is a local company, which carries out extensive fire damage repairs. We can help you, no matter how bad your situation. Call us 24/7 at (410) 679-6260.

Three Appliances That Commonly Cause Flood Damage

11/27/2016 (Permalink)

Flooding from a Storm or Internal Problem Affects Homes in Joppatowne

A Flooded Floor Should Get Immediate Attention to Mitigate Water Damage

While many homeowners have plans to protect their homes in the event of flooding caused by natural disasters, floods that result from appliance malfunction are harder to plan for. Such water emergencies are often sudden, come with little warning, and leave homeowners scrambling to solve the problem.

Before your home is affected by flood damage in Joppatowne, it is important to know the common culprits of household flooding. Here are three appliances that often cause flood damage and how SERVPRO can help.
Water Heaters
Because approximately 70% of water heaters fail by the time they have been in use for 12 years or more, this is one of the most common causes of flood damage in homes. The majority of flooding from water heaters is due to burst tanks or leaks. Since flood damage from hot water heaters involves clean water, SERVPRO technicians are typically able to restore most affected household items and extract the water from all types of flooring and rugs.
When a dishwasher floods a home, it is often mid-cycle and usually, happens with units that are at least ten years old. Though old dishwashers fail more often, even newer models can cause a water emergency if there's a detached drain line or the appliance was improperly installed. We aim to quickly and thoroughly restore homes with this type of flooding, so structural damage does not become a problem in the future. In this case, preservation of the base cabinets requires the fast removal of any standing water.
Washing Machines
It is not usually washing machine units that malfunction and cause flood damage, but the hoses which connect washers to their water source. Check your washer's hoses monthly for signs of cracks, discoloration, or blistering, especially if you use it frequently. Though gray water is typically involved with flood damage from washing machines, our experts can save most flooring and furniture affected by it. When we restore your possessions, you do not have to spend extra money on replacements. Fast water removal simplifies the entire flooding issue.
The experts at SERVPRO of Harford County are well equipped to restore your flooded home after any water emergency quickly. Call us 24/7 at (410) 679-6260 for a rapid response.

Don't Let Water Damage Ruin Your Business

For a local bakery, the chemical agents we use for cleaning may not be an option. Foodstuffs are very sensitive to absorbing odors, and even the lingering odor from a strong antimicrobial agent could render ingredients useless and serving areas irritating to customer's noses.

This means that cleaning up commercial water damage in a Riverside bakery may take a bit longer. Instead of using cleaning agents, our technicians here at SERVPRO will rely on the air moving equipment in our inventory to dry the building and reopen the doors for business.

Lower speed air movers work well to push wet air out of a room or hallway. By using a shroud with them to direct the air, these movers are also excellent for drying out the moisture that can be trapped between sheets of drywall or under cabinets.

The air movers we use are designed to not just dry out a room, but with the right attachment (a special clamp), our higher speed models can also be used to dry out a carpet and carpet pad in less than a day. If we can start this process quickly enough after standing water has been removed (and if the water was not contaminated), then we can restore most carpeted areas in a day or two without the need of chemical cleaning agents.

For large areas such as kitchens, we will use venting box fans to exchange the wet air for dry air. It is also in areas like this with large surfaces (preparations tables) where we may need to use some cleaning agents. The box fans will speed up removing odors as our technicians employ the chemical cleaners.

Restoring a food service business brings its own set of problems. SERVPRO of Harford County has the experience and the equipment to get the job done. If you have a water problem in your business, call us today at (410) 679-6260 to begin restoration and get your doors open to customers once more.

The Accepted Standard for Water Damage Restoration in Edgewood

11/3/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO sets the standard for water damage restoration. Call today to begin the process!

Licensed Restoration Companies Have the Experience to Deal with Your Water Problems

Currently, there are no government regulations outlining procedures for water damage cleanup. There are two certifying standard bodies that provide the rules of care procedures: Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (“IICRC”) and the Restoration Industry Association (“RIA”). The restoration companies are regulated by Maryland's Department of Consumer Affairs.
If your home experiences water damage in Edgewood, contact a restoration company. The IICRC is a non-profit organization that offers certification programs and standards used by the restoration industry. An IICRC company must demonstrate proof of insurance and provide education and training, leading to a certification for technicians.
The RIA is a trade association for cleaning and restoration professionals. They offer education, training, technical support and certification for technicians. Restoration companies are generally the first responders after significant damage to a home from floods, water, fires, mold, and other major events.
The job of a restoration company is to clean, preserve, and protect the home and its contents so that additional damage will not occur. Not all restoration companies are certified to repair your home unless they are licensed. Our SERVPRO technicians are licensed to do home improvement by the state of Maryland, as well as perform home repairs.
Most Maryland insurance adjusters and claim representatives are familiar with SERVPRO as a quality restoration company in your community that can begin the clean-up, restoration and repair process quickly. When contacted, our restoration technicians will arrive and evaluate the work to be done and the equipment needed to restore you to a pre-damage condition.
SERVPRO of Harford County is nearby because we are locally owned and operated. Our technicians are the best in the industry with IICRC certification and training. If your home or business receives damage from fire, water, mold, or a storm, call us at (410) 679-6260 and let us safely restore you back to normal.

How Mold Can Slip Into A Residence Unnoticed

10/17/2016 (Permalink)

Mold is a time-tested and very hardy organism, and its life cycle and biological abilities allow it to invade homes through even the smallest cracks.

Mold Can Slip Into Your Property Unseen

When mold takes root in a home, many owners are left questioning how the infectious organism got into the property in the first place. Mold is a time-tested and very hardy organism, and its life cycle and biological abilities allow it to invade homes through even the smallest cracks or your front door. There is no true way to keep mold out of a home, but keeping away water damage and excess moisture will help to reduce the chance of it beginning to grow. Here are some of the factors that cause mold to grow unexpectedly and everywhere in a residence without you even knowing it.

Mold Grows from Microscopic Spores
The first thing you need to know about the start of your case of mold damage in Riverside is that the mold started from only one or two tiny, uncontrollable spores. Spores act like seeds, being blown by the wind or carried on a surface to another place, where it may find food sources and water sufficient enough to begin the cycle of growth. There is little you can do to hinder spores from reaching your home, although during a mold remediation project SERVPRO technicians will bring out air filtration devices to take most of the excess spores out of your home's atmosphere.

Much Like a Plant, Mold Takes Root and Grows
Although all molds are fungi and completely distinct from plant life, their growth cycle often bears a remarkable similarity to some types of vegetation. Mold spores, once they have reached a place with excellent growing conditions (such as your home), will begin to take root and start to grow out and up much like a vine. It will then produce pods of spores, which, once disturbed, will scatter and create new patches of growth.

Mold is Highly Durable
Over time, mold has developed incredibly strong resistances to effects such as temperature, wind, some chemicals, and time. Mold spores can remain for many years in harsh conditions, waiting to find a spot which allows for growth. The parent body of the mold in your home could potentially have died off decades ago.

Trained and equipped for any mold damage which might hit your home, SERVPRO of Harford County is ready 24/7 to answer your call and respond to a case of mold damage in the local area. Contact us at (410) 679-6260.

Preventing and Alleviating Flood Damage

Clean Gutters and Drains Keep Water From Damaging Your Walls

Gutter System Inspections Can Prove to Be Invaluable

Homes can be made unlivable in less than a day with only a few inches of water. Damage to the house and furnishings can be caused by ruptured pipes and broken sprinklers, but right now, the primary threat is from thunderstorms.

Regardless of the source, flood damage in Havre De Grace can destroy homes and displace families very quickly. The keys to stopping this from happening are preventing it and quickly responding when it does happen. SERVPRO has the personnel and equipment to help you do both.

We offer a free, first-time inspection of your home to identify potential risks. For damage to homes, some of the first things our people look for are broken or clogged drainage systems. If drain pipes are not adequately secured to the rain gutters, then water that should be flowing away from your home could be pouring down the wall. This will destroy siding and landscaping.

If it continues, there will be damage to the walls and eventually the foundation. Once water gets past the siding and into the house, drywall is quickly compromised. Once it becomes soaked, then rot can quickly get started in the frame holding the drywall. Carpets are soon soaked, and wood floors can start to warp in only a day.

If it does happen, our team of technicians has the equipment to rapidly remove water and dry carpets, floors and walls. We use commercial grade pumps and maintain our own generators when the power may still be off-line. To remove the moisture, we have an extensive inventory of fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers to preserve the structure of your home, reduce the damage to drywall and paneling and prevent the need to replace carpets, flooring, and furniture.

The weather is looking OK now, but thunderstorms and the damage they bring can strike at any time. If you want to get ahead of the next flood, call us today at SERVPRO of Hartford County at (410) 679-6260. We're ready to help.

Steps Taken in the Cleanup of Water Damage

Water Damaged Corridor - Damage from Floor to Ceiling

SERVPRO Handles the Entire Remediation Process

Water damage can come from many different sources, with varying intensities, danger levels, and reach of damage. Ultimately, many different objects, surfaces, and materials in a home can suffer water damage from the same event, and many homeowners question how a company such as SERVPRO handles a comprehensive water damage cleanup job. In this blog post, you'll learn about some of the ways our technicians control and repair water damage in local residences.
Identifying the Source and Water Type
Before all, water damage in Edgewood must be correctly defined by water type and source. Did it come from a storm or flood, or was it a pipe burst? There are also different types of water, typically categorized as either clean, gray, or black, each one with different safety and cleanup protocols. If necessary, our crew will work to stop the water flow as quickly as possible, to avert further damage to your home.
Surveying Damage and Mold
After we understand what type of damage we're dealing with, our technicians search the home visually and with moisture detection equipment to find out what objects have been affected, and what else needs to be done. Additionally, we look for signs of mold growth, which often takes priority in a cleanup operation.
Furniture and Water Removal
The next step is to remove all furniture from affected areas, and then pump out water if necessary. We use industrial-grade machinery to pump water from the interior to the exterior of the home, with either a portable or a truck-mounted pump.
Drying and Odor Treatments
At this point, we bring out more heavy machinery to begin drying and deodorizing the affected area, to make sure no more damage or mold growth occurs and any bad smells are removed.
Carpet Removal and Final Cleaning
In many cases, some or all of the carpeting in a room will need replacing. We make sure to evaluate carpeting carefully for moisture so as not to incur extra expenses. Sometimes, a cleaning may only be necessary, particularly when water damage is contained early on. After that is done, final cleanup and sanitization are done on walls and objects, and furniture is brought back into the home or rooms affected.
SERVPRO of Harford County employs certified and well-trained technicians who are experienced with all kinds of water damage restoration and cleanup jobs. If you need our services for any type or volume of water damage to your home, call us at (410) 679-6260 for 24/7 emergency service.

Mold Damage & Remediation

6/27/2016 (Permalink)

Our crew at SERVPRO of Harford County can make your Fallston mold remediation "Like it never even happened."

Mold Infestation & Restoration

When you are facing mold damage, it is important to understand the basics of mold removal and mold remediation. It is relatively simple, and it is essential in hiring the right company at the highest quality and the right price. While understanding and learning the basic ideas of the removal of mold and remediation are simple, actually doing the work properly is challenging. That is why it is best left to trained professionals, like our team at SERVPRO. Anyone who has a mold problem, however, can understand the basic concepts of remediation of the mold without needing a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biology, and Earth Sciences.

There are five basic principles of the removal of Fallston mold for it to be successful that we at SERVPRO will follow when we come out to your property:

1. Safety – this involves protecting all occupants and workers.

2. Assessment – We will begin with a preliminary evaluation, an assessment while going through the remediation process, and a final assessment after the remediation is complete to ensure it was successful.

3. Contamination Control – We will prevent any cross-contamination and spreading of the mold from the areas which are contaminated to areas that are not contaminated.

4. Source removal – We will remove the mold at its source.

5. Moisture Removal – We will eliminate the moisture problem which caused the outbreak of mold in the first place.

These five basic principles work no matter what type of mold is being dealt with, including black mold. There is no need to assume that your home is a total loss when you see mold. We can most certainly find the problem and perform a successful remediation of the mold so you can get back to life as usual.

After we remove the mold physically from its source, we will also clean the air in your structure of any airborne spores of the mold using HEPA air scrubbers and air exchange, or replace the dirty, air that is moldy, with clean and fresh air.

We will also take the time to explain to you in plain English all about the remediation process that we plan on using before we begin doing anything. It is important to us that you feel comfortable with what we are doing and understand the process as we go. If you ever have any questions, we are here to answer them, and we will be very understanding in doing so. We want you to know that we have your best interests in mind, and you are not just a number to us.

Other things we will do is use an antimicrobial chemical to clean up the mold and any stains it left behind, and a sealant when the treated areas are clean to make it more resistant to water damage and mold in the future.

Water Damage in Aberdeen--Dangers of Hidden Water

5/3/2016 (Permalink)

Don't Let a Water Pipe Break Through Your Wall in Aberdeen.

SERVPRO Can Detect Hidden Moisture and Restore Your Aberdeen Water Damaged Home

Many Aberdeen homes get damaged by water, and homeowners do not even recognize it until it is too late. Dangers lurk behind the walls of your home. Water can sneak into your home slowly through windows, seals, and cracks.

You might touch a wall, and it feels dry. The wall could be saturated with water, and you would not know. Water damage restoration companies in Aberdeen can use thermal imaging to determine if there is water behind your walls. This camera will detect variations in temperature which can indicate a moisture buildup or lots of water. It helps to check if there is a concern that a leak or other water accumulating event may be transpiring.

A surprisingly large number of homes have undetected water damage. This water damage can lead to mold growth and mold spores, leading to more mold growth. Further, hidden water in Aberdeen that is untreated could result in structural damage and degradation of clothing and photographs. Having your home inspected every so often for water intrusions can help prevent large and inconvenient expenses down the line.

You may have a pipe that is running inside a wall that has a small pinhole leak in it. That can cost you money in larger than usual utility bills and repairs to drywall, wood studs, and flooring. No one wants to replace furniture because of a water leak. Meanwhile, there may be no water damage evident to the untrained eye so that the eventual evidence may be very startling.

Spotting Water Damage
Water or moisture that is behind walls, underneath the flooring, or above your ceilings, many times it is not discovered until the damage becomes visible or very pronounced. The source of not yet discovered water damage can be difficult to fix if there is not a hint of a problem.
Be proactive and look for signs of water damage by checking all areas. Water may compromise materials and leave soft spots with discoloration. These are signs that you have hidden water damage lurking nearby. Periodically check your walls and floors to see if something looks or feels out of place or soft and spongy. Look at an angle at your baseboards and walls to see if there are any rippling patterns to the paint or peeling off wallpaper.
Moisture also leaves behind a sense of dampness that evolves into the musty odor given off by mold. It is important to try to smell for water damage. Keep watch over water damage prone areas in your Aberdeen residence by regularly checking pipe connections and inspecting kitchens, bathrooms, or other rooms for water damage.
If you have Aberdeen water damage, call in the IICRC certified experts from SERVPRO of Harford County to remedy the situation.  They have the equipment and devices to check for water or moisture issues. And if hidden water damage is uncovered, they will treat the water damaged areas quickly and efficiently. SERVPRO is available 24/7/365 for any fire, mold, or water damage problem or emergency. The Basics of Bel Air Fire Damage

While flooding and mold can be scary, there’s nothing quite like a fire to remind homeowners how fragile a building can be. For all homes and businesses in Bel Air, fire damage is something that needs to be dealt with quickly and professionally. Once the immediate emergency has been taken care of, it is time to call in the restoration experts from SERVPRO.

This guide to dealing with fire damage in Bel Air will help you get to grips with some of the steps involved in repair and restoration.

How Long Does Fire Damage Restoration Take?
Clearly, this will depend on how extensive the damage is. If you’ve had a small kitchen fire, for example, but it was put out quickly, the work will probably be quite efficient. If the damage is mostly superficial – burn marks on the outer surface of walls – painting and redecorating should be easy and uncomplicated.

If the damage is more extensive, the restoration could take months. Our reliable SERVPRO fire damage repair company never rushes or compromises on the quality of a job, in order to get occupants back inside faster, because this can put lives at risk. The best way to stay in the loop is to work with our fire damage restoration company that keeps you constantly updated during each stage of the repair process.

Can a Restoration Team Eliminate Smoke Damage?
Yes, our skilled restoration team will use a combination of fogging and ozone deodorization techniques to remove the smell and sight of smoke from the building. Both methods involve heavy duty equipment, so you shouldn’t try to tackle them independently. Let our experts do the job efficiently and professionally, so that you can get back to enjoying your home.

Can You Hire a Fire Damage Team Without Insurance?
Strictly speaking, you don’t need to be covered by fire damage insurance to hire a restoration team. However, it is strongly advised. If you don’t have any type of cover in place, you will be responsible for paying the cost of repair and restoration, in full. As this kind of work requires specialist skills and equipment, it can be expensive. Make certain that you have an insurance policy, so that the expense doesn’t become another disaster.

Assessment of a Water Damaged Home in Bel Air

Large Amounts of Unwanted Water Calls for Professional Assistance

Bel Air Water Damage Assessment

If your home in Bel Air has been affected by a flood, it will be necessary for an expert to do a water damage assessment to determine the extent of the damage. And what will be needed for restoration. Once you have received the clearance to enter your home, you need to call your homeowner's insurance adjuster.  After the inspector has looked at the home; a recommendation can be made to clean up the damage and get life back to normal.

Assessing the Structure

The structure of your home is the most important aspect when assessing water damage. If the structure is damaged, your home could collapse or shift. By calling a water restoration company such as SERVPRO, an experienced professional can execute a thorough inspection and also determine the correct clean-up protocol.  Professionals will inspect the roof to identify missing shingles, damaged gutters, and cracks in the exterior of the house. The walls and windows will be inspected and covered to prevent additional damage. The attic needs to be addressed as well as all interior rooms, including bathrooms. If the house has a basement, the foundation requires a visual exterior and interior inspection.  The integrity of the HVAC system must be evaluated for water intrusion and damage. The yard will be assessed to identify standing water, sewage leakage and water damage caused soil erosion.

Assessing Personal Possessions

Some will be able to be cleaned and repaired, and others may need to be discarded. A water restoration company can take an inventory of the items that are destroyed and provide the homeowner with information to give to the insurance company. Churchville Mold Damage

5/12/2015 (Permalink)

Mold can be caused by a large number of things, and some of those things are completely preventable.

Mold Damage

One of the most dangerous things about Churchville mold is just how well it can hide. It grows in moist, warm environments. When it's on the outside of the house, its organic look can blend in very well, making it very hard to properly identify. In addition to that, it's very easy for it grow inside the walls or even right below floor paneling, which can cause it to lie undetected for a long time. Regardless of where it actually grows, its presence can be a major danger to anyone nearby, as the spores it releases can be toxic and sometimes even lethal. Aside from that, wherever it's currently growing can become severely and irreparably damaged.

Churchville Mold can develop just about anywhere, such as under carpeting, on your furniture, in the bones of the house, or even on leaves or trees outside. Wherever it lands, it begins to decompose its host and will continue to break it down and breed through the use of airborne spores. If you've ever picked up a moldy book and have had it crumble apart in your hands, you'll know just how dangerous mold can be when it affects things like drywall, insulation, or cabinets.

Mold can be caused by a large number of things, and some of those things are completely preventable. Common causes include things such as a burst pipe that leaks water underneath the floorboards or behind walls. A leaky roof is another common occurrence that many homeowners face, and it's another way mold can develop. Another way mold spores get spread is during a fire cleanup at home or even in the office. This latter cause in particular can result in a wide spread proliferation of mold spores.

Once Churchville mold spores have become airborne, they can easily float around the general area and create a whole new colony in a completely separate place, which makes ultimately removing the mold much more difficult and frustrating.
